I can but it took me a long time to learn how and I am embarrassingly slow at it.

I think you're on the spectrum. If you want a diagnosis, make a list like the one you posted and show it to a specialist. Good luck!

I also have trouble being able to focus on a topic that is not a special interest of mine. I struggle with motivation then and it is almost impossible to get myself to do the work.

You sound aspie to me. With your insurance, could you get an evaluation?

I would find a different doctor and go in with a written list of symptoms.

I would look into getting tested. Maybe you have problems with communication and socialization that you aren't even aware of. During testing, they observe you and look for things like eye contact, posture, and use of gestures. Those are things that are so habitual to you that you might not be cogniz...

I've also noticed with myself that I can handle big crowds when it's something I really want to do, but if it isn't, I get overstimulated easier. I think it has to do with our special interests and obsessions. If I have a special interest (like Disney World), I might become so absorbed in the experi...

What are the biggest challenges parents on the spectrum face? It's really difficult for me to be able to focus on my son when all I can think of is my special interests and how I wish I had more time for them. I feel so divided and guilty for this. It's also hard to engage in the socialization my so...

I have mild autism. I wouldn't want to change it because it is part of who I am. I love my special interests and talents. On the other hand, I wish I could get rid of the comorbids - depression and anxiety.

In my early 20s I worked hard at changing my posture and eye contact. It was a lot of work, but people noticed the results and complimented me on it.

Growing up, I'd go through phases where I'd be terrified/obsessed with one thing - tornadoes, volcanoes, getting diseases, car accidents, etc. It was really difficult. My fears would even cause panic attacks and vivid nightmares. Is this a typical aspire thing? I was and am afraid of the dark and sl...

I don't feel like my past is cringe-worthy anymore. With my diagnosis, I was able to forgive myself and let go of the past. It has been very freeing.

Welcome!

Some counselors are psychologists. They can give a diagnosis, but you really should go to a psychologist or psychiatrist who specializes in ASDs. A typical psych doctor doesn't usually have the training to diagnose high functioning individuals who have adapted in various ways to blend in with NTs. Y...
