My parents want me to move into a group home. I do not WANT to live in a group home and don't know what they're like. Does anyone have experience either working in or living in one? I am not group-oriented. Who got the idea that disabled people all want to live lumped together? I prefer quiet and so...

I was going to create a topic like this one. Yes, how do you raise IQ score ? This is one of my special interests. Most books and websites will tell you a good sleep, multivitamins and music, but I mean, and what I need, are books and sites on how the tests work, figuring out the questions. I look o...

Yeah, the economy is really bad. Living at home is, for young adults at least, considered more and more acceptable. On subsidized housing, the idea of it is appealing, but there's still the snag of me not being able to live on my own. :/ For those who can't live on their own, what kind of supports d...

It makes sense. I just want to (re)claim that part of myself and move forward.

Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: what would you tell a parent with a child with ASD

I would tell them to accept their child as they are and focus on their strengths, not just their weaknesses. I would also tell them that their child is not going to be "normal", so don't wish for it or make their child feel bad for being different.

Thank you for all the replies. For me, "making it" means having my own place, whether renting or owning, my own rules, my own autonomy. Owning my own business and being self-employed. Being able to manage basic life on my own. Being educated. Having a husband and children. That sort of thi...

Yes, they do. It's hard to be positive when I'm faced with so many challenges. From AS, to cerebral palsy, to visual impairment, to ADHD, memory problems, diabetes and other health issues and cannot live on my own, or, apparently, accomplish anything, and live in poverty. There's some kind of a bias...

As a child, it turns out I was quite gifted, only I didn't know it. I just thought all the things I wanted to learn were completely normal despite being far beyond my peers. Yes, I was that socially oblivious. My IQ was tested repeatedly, but I never remember hearing about the results. I grew up thi...

I took a balloon off a shop display the other day and hit my 23 yr old daughter on the head with it.

:)

That made me giggle!

And I agree. It's okay to want a balloon at a fair at any age.

Perhaps start by thinking about what skills you have or can and want to develop, then take action in that direction. I would choose a direction and go in it, it is better than being aimless. I have no idea what skills I have... So little confidence in my abilities. I'd like to develop IT skills, bu...

Nope. I have no money, so I just ignore advertising and move on. Sometimes I wonder what the supermarkets would look like without all the fancy packaging and having to rely solely on the product inside the package.

I'm working with an agency that is supposed to help me with employment. My path is self-employment and yet they want to stick me with a job. In my opinion, they're very out of touch with what would make me comfortable. So far, I am not impressed.

I can't make it in life. I'm so impaired with AS that I have almost no wish to socialize with others, I can't pass for NT, and I can't live on my own. Every day is the same day in and day out. I have a strong desire to start a business that hires individuals with AS and other disabilities but no ide...
