I guess NVLD includes ASD people who (like myself and my son) have strong (abnormally strong) verbal skills but deficits in other areas--areas in which AS people are assumed to excel. Oh, and throw in the social skills problems (affect, eye contact, etc.). I also have a verbal IQ that is at least 40...

Hello, I am experiencing a similar situation, although I have not yet shared my diagnosis with my employers. I realize that if I demand some basic accommodations (such as written instructions), the result may well be that some uncomfortable secrets are exposed ( I’ll spare you the details, but suffi...

Hello all, I am planning to meet with my psychiatrist and my therapist to discuss revealing my autism/ Asperger’s to my employer and creating a 504 plan. I have a diagnosis (that also include ADHD and generalized anxiety disorder) from 2006. All I really need is for instructions and policies to be p...

I know it's not for everybody, but the works of Joyce are likely to appeal to many of us with AS. (Yeah, you know what's coming next: it's likely he was one of us.) Anything you are forced to read (usually by some snooty prof. standing on the shoulders of giants) is a drudge, but give it a chance. I...

Got 36% right. I do much better with the drawings! But look, I thought all these faces were rather phony--that is I knew they were actors so most seemed silly to me. I also wonder about the distinction between contempt and disgust. You know I thought some of the people looked like they were about to...

something else: a few doctors have noted that my son's head has two "hair whorls" on the back. This seems to be an indicator of something. (I have them too--and mine are in some really strange designs.) Any ideas of how this relates to the inside of our heads? I know it's not Phrenology; it's taken ...

Don't know about the other one but O'Brian stuff is the only "series" I've been able to read. I guess you'd expect to hear this, so here goes: one of the characters shows AS traits and about midway through the books, he has a daughter with autism (well, it's undiagnosed of course in the early 1800s.)

"Hey, I'm over here." I've heard this all my life. My eyes always seem to go to the right. And not just when I'm looking at people. I tend to look at my hands when I talk to people. I can fake eye contact when needed, but it hurts. Really it hurts! After a few seconds it's like the effort of holding...

Hate and fear Sundays, at least from late afternoon on. See, every week it seems I have to start things over. It's been that way since first grade. I feel sick, worried, etc. even when I have the Monday off.

REMF --office work? Oh, yes; but there are so many others! How about the real translation? HA! But what could be worse than 54 Charlie? Oh if I stayed in, I could be retired by now (at speedy 4). Or dead. Some AS guys are better at soldier stuff than others. I'm worse at office politics.

I am terrified of most social situations. Yet, under the right circumstances, I am quite comfortable. I speak in front of my students all day, I am great at telling stories or jokes. Years ago, when I made a half-hearted attempt to be an actor, I appeared naked on stage (long enough for anyone who c...

I look mid-20s, tops. But when the grey hair kicks in, I might look my age. I stopped drinking and smoking 16 years ago and I stopped growing in 1980--I could still wear my old clothes. Still, maybe I just look like I just dropped out of the sky--I'm just as confused as I was at age 13. Same dopey/b...

Here's one way: if Ritalin works on you, you have ADHD. I was diagnosed with the inattentive ADHD; but the meds dis nothing but make me edgy and restless. And I still had all the AS symptoms folks talk about here. Later I was able to get my special ed records from elementary school which really nail...

I saw this stuff in the book "Parenting Your Asperger's Child." Some NT people with AS kids swear by it (should we swear at it?) I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the idea of subgroups of AS--but this stuff doesn't sound right to me. Still, I remember reading Attwood's book that was published in the...

When I was in third grade, I teacher, a sweet old lady who meant no harm, said, "Why don't you ever smile? My cat smiles more than you do." My thought was something like "I've got f-all to smile about, lady," but worse it was the first time I noticed that people looked at me. I spent some time tryin...
