I think I had a CT scan when I was about six and fell and hit my head on the cement. I've never had an fMRI or anything though. A professor at my school specifically studies neuroimaging in ASD, but I don't think I can be both a participant and a researcher so it's unlikely I'll get the chance any t... |

I agree with the other posts. I can understand your concern (as I've thought about that as well). I'm already planning to be seen by a genetic counselor, simply because I'm kind of neurotic (not to mention chronic health issues seem to run in my family....). Studies into the genetics of ASD are stil... |

I felt terrible when I was diagnosed recently. I just hoped I had some kind of anxiety disorder that could be worked on, or I was a latebloomer of some kind. Then I found out that my chances at a normal life are doomed. But it's probably better knowing than not knowing (if it will not cause you to ... |

Oh, no, in my report, while he recommended psychotherapy, he said not to change me. But I was diagnosed through the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. So his recommendation to THEM was that I was a bad fit for nursing (I have a license as a practical nurse), and that I should seek education f... |

Thank you guys. It's almost like I feel guilty for not feeling super excited... Hey!! ! Me too!! ! Mine on Friday!! Congrats! It is a little surreal. I have been piecing this together for two years, and became convinced over a year ago, and it still seems surreal. While not faking anything, it feels... |

So I guess I was just officially diagnosed. I had an appointment with a local ASD specialist that primarily treats teens and young adults like myself, and not surprisingly, he agreed that I meet criteria for ASD. We're gonna work on my social skills and other ASD issues. He also suggested some group... |

Yes, I do this too. I was actually recently assessed by an ASD specialist who primarily works with little kids. She diagnosed me with SAD, so for a short time I was leaning towards the "not ASD." However, after really looking over my life and doing more research into girls with ASD, if any... |

Jessica (if you are still reading here) I continue to think especially about your experience. I wonder if you are familiar with the term "mistaking the map for the territory" (which may be very relevant to your frustrating experience with the clinician you saw). A link on this: http://rat... |

Wow! I recently had a similar experience when I went to get diagnosed (I also needed the diagnosis for accommodations and such). Right down to the introspection thing - I was told that people with ASD aren't aware of their social deficits. (Which really makes no sense if you think about it... if peo... |

I agree that it's an issue. I was recently told that my hair twirling/stroking basically couldn't be a stim because it "has more to do with anxiety." I find that odd though because the other girls with AS that I've interacted with report hair twirling being their most common stim... and if... |

Clinicians rely on the accuracy of what the client tells them and also on the behaviour presented in a clinical setting being representative of that client's behaviour in other settings. I don't behave in a clinical setting with one or two professionals in the same way that I do in an unstructured ... |

I think there's a damaging myth that confuses empathy with sympathy, and that we can't form a "theory of mind." Empathy is "mind reading." It is the ability to pick up on face, body, and tone cues to infer another's internal emotional state. Sympathy is the capacity to care abou... |

A year long mandatory class for this seems overkill. If there is a class on autism awareness, shouldn't there also be classes for awareness of other mental disorders, since there are plenty of children who have adhd, anxiety disorders, intellectual disability, bipolar, etc? Exactly. It sounds unnec... |

I think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and ask her out in a couple of days after her Birthday. Yeah, I don't really see her enough to become a friend first and I've got no desire to try and break out of the friendzone! Good luck on your end too. I'm actually in the same situation with a ... |

As far as I know: she's not leaving him. She basically filed for divorce for Robyn's kids from her previous relationship to be protected legally or something like that. |

People rarely ask me directly. They just assume, get angry, and avoid me. Besides, I'm not going to tell a stranger I have aspergers. Well you don't have to tell them you have AS, but may be able to explain how you communicate differently (though you don't have to explain it exactly like that). I w... |
