@neilson_wheels, Oops, you're right! I originally wrote it the other way around and guess I didn't edit thoroughly. It should read, "typically 10% larger than the domesticated variety." I'll see if I can edit the original. Well spotted!

Well, in this case, you're comparing an underfed domestic cat to well-fed ones, and yes that certainly has a lot to do with it. What I'm talking about here is groups as a whole, say, Felis cattus (or whatever it is these days...) to Felis lybica . You see the same differences in dogs/wolves, ferrets...

Here's a thought.... For many, many years I was involved in ferret advocacy, which meant spending way too much time proving that ferrets were, in fact, a domestic animal and therefore not under the purview of state fish and game departments. In doing this I gathered (of course I did, I'm an Aspie) e...

I used to be a moderator on a computer game and as such became the "Aspie Aunt" to many Aspie players. I have always told players who had trouble dealing with crowds and just other people in general to keep in mind that Shakespeare was right: All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely...

Personally, I think this is a great time to be on the spectrum. Having been born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, back in the days when being born and raised in Brooklyn actually meant something, it's been striking me more and more that perhaps "the spectrum" is an evolutionary way of coping with l...

Interesting article, thanks for the link. When I was in grade school and high school, I noticed I had tons of friends when something artistic and/or musical needed to be done. I always wondered what was so awful about me that at all other times, I was a pariah (When Janis Ian's song "At Seventeen" c...

Oh, heck yeah. Your story could be mine. Actually I see it all as quite reasonable. After all, you try on clothes to see if they fit. We try on people to see if they fit, and if they don't, they don't and there's an end of it. At least we're honest about it.

Sounds like you had the kind of childhood that I had. I didn't get the "girlie" gene. I have always been ... embarrassed and revolted by all things cute and almost all things "lady-like." Mother Dearest (said with the deepest possible sarcasm) had extra doses of the girlie gene and ... well, you can...

To answer the original question, what I love to do more than anything else in life is drawing horses. I am kind of ashamed to say that I enjoy drawing them more than I enjoy riding them (which is just peachy with them!). Nowadays I make a living drawing horses for a horse-centered online game. How d...

I was just reading another thread on empathy, and it reminded me of something that's been puzzling me for a while. I have absolutely no empathy for human beings. I'm a good actress by now, and I can fake it tolerably well (I think), but I don't feel it. No matter what I think of, or how I try to put...

My reaction -- and I was formally diagnosed when nearly 60! -- was, "COOL!" I have never minded being weird, but it's nice to know why. Now I sign my emails with, "I don't have Asperger's Syndrome -- I revel in it!"

I have to say, I'm startled to hear that people laugh when you slip, because, klutz that I am, I slip all the time and have never had that happen once out of elementary school. Usually people do rush up to help. I suppose it has a lot to do with how people were raised.

When I was incarcerated in an all-girls' Catholic High School back in the Olden Days when nuns were terrifying, we had an Etiquette teacher named Miss Howe. (There, I've thoroughly dated myself!) She was... pretty loopy, but she did teach me/us one invaluable lesson I've never forgotten, and that wa...

When I was younger, yes, I was very, very much like you. I needed someone with me who knew I was "a wacko" but didn't mind. (Someone who doesn't mind is way better than someone who doesn't care, I've found.) Now I'm married to an Aspie and we sort of hang on each other for the same reason, and faili...

The Linux devices are just called "Zaurus." I think they are still sold in Japan, but not in the US. You should be able to Google them. What I really liked about them was that they take ... can't remember the word ... handwriting input, as well as keyboard input. They have a plastic screen, though, ...

Actually, I've had two great little pocket PCs, two types of Zaurus. Used Linux as an operating system. They're no longer made but you can still find them on eBay. Extremely handy little things!
