I really appreciate all of the input and insights! To clarify, I don't want to make her give up her "friends" or make her feel bad about treating them like real people. I just thought she should be aware that others would think that behavior is odd. But maybe it doesn't matter? Maybe she'l...

Thank you all for the insight and suggestions. We do have pets -- cats, dogs, chickens, and snakes. She LOVES the chickens, but doesn't seem to attach emotions to any of the pets like she does her toys. I've been trying to help her interpret animal body language, and am not making much progress. She...

My daughter is 11 and going into 6th grade. She has always been enamored with reptilian, scaly things such as dinosaurs and Godzilla, and we have supported her interests. For the past couple years, she has loved kaiju, which are Japanese monsters, and the movie Pacific Rim. She collects figures, and...

My daughter is 8 and loves school. She is integrated into general ed most of the day and has a paraeducator with her much of the time. She is extremely social and has many friends, both on the spectrum and NT. Previously, whenever I'd try to ask her about how her day was at school, I would get very ...

Confused Newb, your daughter sounds a lot like mine. The first thing out of her mouth when she gets off the bus is "Can I have my iPod?" Same thing when she wakes up in the morning. Obsessed! And the food... Oh my! I don't know how many times she'll be eating a meal and all of a sudden a bite of som...

Thank you for sharing your stories! Despite the never ending mess, it is comforting to know that this is not uncommon. I agree that she does not forget -anything- even from when she was three years old. But she is also incredibly loving and forgiving, and for that I am thankful. If she gets upset ov...

My daughter is an almost-8-year-old Aspie. She considers all of her stuffed animals to be her friends, complete with thoughts and feelings. I believe she thinks this of most toys or other objects that have been given to her. As a result, she cannot get rid of ANYTHING. It borders on hoarding, as she...

I have ideas for a series of children's books (social story type) and am curious whether illustrations using photographs or drawings/paintings are more appealing to kids with Aspergers or autism? These are probably for the 5-10 age group.
Thanks! |

My second grader has aspergers and quite bright, but completely unmotivated to learn. She has math and reading homework every night, and it is tortuous for us and her. The math is simple addition and subtraction, stuff she should have memorized (all numbers less than ten), but doesn't. We use animal...

I stumbled across this message board while looking for help with my daughter's debilitating fear of spiders, and felt compelled to reply to this post. I met my 7-year-old daughter three years ago when I began dating her mom. She has extreme ADHD and was not medicated yet, so her behaviors got pretty...
