My son wouldn't be doing so well if not for early interventions. However, at the time he didn't even have a PDD label. He just got help with his trouble spots---not being able to speak frustrated him and made him rage. Once he learned good speech, he never raged again. He had OT and PT and social sk...

I'm a mother with some Aspie traits. My son would have become more reclusive if I hadn't kept him in school with supports. He's doing so well now that I'm positive I made the right decision, at least for him. Nobody makes fun of him. He has a lot of friends. He doesn't hang with them AFTER school, b...

Oh, wanted to add that son is very quiet. If I ask him if he's lonely he says, "no." But he won't elaborate. Or he'll shrug. He doesnt seem depressed or anything. It's hard to know what's on his mind because he doesn't share.

Wow. You have all been sooooooo helpful and I really appreciate the great feedback. Seems like the general consensus is it's an anxiety issue. I'm not going to force my son to make eye contact. He is going to start to see an ASD specialist who works with teens with Aspergers on social skills. Maybe ...

My hub, myself and son went to Open House for high school last night. Son tends to keep his head kind of down when there are a lot of people around, although many were very friendly and said "hi" to him and he said "hi" back and spoke to the teachers. He doesn't really act shy anymore, in fact he so...

I loved LOVED your explanation of punishment. I always wondered if I was a bad parent for letting my kid play his videogames...I'm glad I never took his videogames as a punishment now. Ok, I need help in another area. My son often doesn't like to accompany us to family affair and usually that's all ...

We don't stop son from acting autistic. He himself holds it in at school, but when he comes home and goes to his room we hear him talking to himself, laughing at the videogames, probably stimming, letting out loud noises, etc. Who cares? I think this helps him hold together at other times, although ...

Have a fifteen year old (his birthday was today...yaaaaaaaaay!). We adopted him at two and he was so out of control we had to put locks high on the doors so he wouldn't run out at 3am and he broke his door three times with his head...lol. Fast forward after all his school interventions plus a lot of...

You know I should mention that we live in a very small town and that he is riding into another small town or a small city (18,000 people)...he goes both places. So I understand parents who live in busy cities being more concerned. I'd be more worried if we lived in, say, Chicago, but I'd be worried ...

My son is 15 and high on the Spectrum, but on it none-the-less. This year he has expressed a huge interest in biking all over the neighborhood and, to be honest, he is more careful than most reckless teens who try tricks in the street. In fact, he tries to stay on the sidewalk and is very diligent a...

He was diagnosed as PDD-NOS, but, except for an early speech delay, this kid is more Aspie. He is eager to make friends and is starting to reach out for the first time. Unfortunately, he two school friends are usually unavailable to do anything. He is willing to ride his bike miles to get to their h...

I'm with an e-pub. It's not a vanity press. I'm under contract. it's a great way to start out, but you have to do a lot of the marketing yourself in order to get people interested. My closest friend has a NY agent now--she started out in e-pub. My problem is I can't find anyone who knows how to do w...

I had a "Top 100" obsession in high school. I knew every song, every artist who sang it, and could go back many years and remember obscure songs and who sang them. I, however, did hate concerts because the music was too loud.
My PDD-NOS son has zilch interest in current hits. I don't care. |

My point isn't that NT parents won't TRY to help their child; it's that on a few boards they had no interest in hearing the inside mind of those who were adults on the spectrum. Bascially, they wanted to hear that it all can go away with the right interventions or DAN doctors (shudder). It doesn't g...

I'm a writer, on top of being on the spectrum. I don't think I'm an Aspie because I am really clueless when it comes to computer/techie stuff (think I"m more PDD-NOS). I need to find somebody who can help me update my website when new books come out, and when I want to run contests. We can talk abou...
