From my understanding, when medical professionals refer to autistic people lacking empathy, they are talking about the ability to recognise emotions. YES. Only these days I'm not so sure they're not autistic. At this point, I really think most of my family actually is. I'm just the only one who's open to it. Same! Well, they're open to it, but they've seen my ten years of trying to get help and I think they're less sure that they'd be any better...

I've found that assumption really strange. I do think it is more what Aaronzx said, that we might have a harder time reading people's emotions and then responding to those, but when we are aware of their feelings, our capacity for empathy is the same.
