To me, the smart is more content because I only have to carry one device, since my continuous glucose monitor has an app to track my glucose levels (although it’s not as accurate as a glucometer.), and, if I ever get off of my fat ass and complete the training, an insulin pump. There’s now an app and hardware to take an ekg, as well as an app to help tune a piano

Literally none of my friends use traditional desktops. Here's another anecdote on this subject: My car was sideswiped in 2023. In a discussion with the gal at the insurance company, she asked if I had a smartphone (??). When she found out I didn't, she said that it was unfortunate because I could have taken some pictures with it and uploaded them to their website. WTF? It's now so much all about the PHOOOOOONNE, that people can't comprehend any other way to perform a task like this. Needless to say, I took several good, clear photos with my DSLR, and uploaded them to the insurance company's website, no smartphone needed!

The phones got smart but the humans got dumb. Go figure.

Of course, it's bad enough I'm addicted to the internet on my home computer. It's the only real connection I have to the world and other people. Before internet I felt more trapped and frustrated by how limited it was telling the world why the people in it suck.

I just don't see the point of the thing. It didn't make sense in 2007, and it doesn't make sense now. *shrug*

In the future with nueral chips that can download all the data in the world and communicate with anyone or any electrical device on the planet through your brain and virtual reality simulations that will be a immersive 4D experience, the smart phone will be as useful as telephone box is to us now.

A smartphone is a spork.

It does many things, but none of them well.

Sometimes it doesn't even work well as a phone.

And don't get me started about keyboard parallax problems when typing.....

I hate a lot of things about the modern world. Sometimes I really wish I can build a time machine and travel back one-way to the 1970s or 1980s and continue aging there up to today. I have a burning curiosity of what it was like to actually live then.

That is EXACTLY right - a jack of all trades, master of none. A grossly overpriced mediocre phone and a HORRID computer. That's the main reason I don't have one - all the other downsides are just secondary.

Go back to the 1960s and enjoy the music.

Also, we had lots of things that are now pretty much banned.

Does anyone still sell chemistry labs for kids?

At least here in Poland you could buy one several years ago; My brother had one when he was 8 or 9 maybe. Idk how about now but I haven't heard about it's ban

Having your own atomic energy lab as a kid would have been really cool:

I don't hate smartphones. I just struggle to get the swiping right. I've just had to upgrade my senior phone as it was 2g and 3g only.

^ Theoretically there are VoLTE dumbphones out there, but good luck finding one that doesn't break apart so quickly (and doesn't run KaiOS, which kinda defeats benefits of a classic phone). Or it's just my unluck...

Eventually I just "dumbed down" my "smart"phone and use it merely for communication and some photo shooting maybe, when I don't have my camcorder.

There are several of them out there - I'm currently running a Sonim XP3Plus, a ruggedized flip. There are others.

You have to make a little bit of effort, but there are plenty of non-smartphones out there. I've never cared for the "candybar" type phone, which is 99% of the smartphones out there (never mind smartphones' other problems) - but flips dominate the dumbphone arena.
