Pidgin is quite customizable, with loads of plugins. And there's a new program replacing Pidgin in the next Ubuntu release called Empathy. Empathy adds support for audio/video chat (among other things) and keeps the entire previous Pidgin feature set. When have you ever seen Pidgin crash? I've had Pidgin running basically nonstop for the past year without ever managing to see it crash once.

Oh, and Windows users don't get to b***h about Linux apps eating RAM. Your entire OS is a bloated pig. I have RAM to use for user apps because I'm not wasting it on the OS.

Foobar2000 is simple, yes, but feature-rich and powerful as hell. It's the standard software music player used by audiophiles. VLC? Are you kidding me? VLC has great 'out of the box' support for lots of different formats, but it's a highly overrated media player. Media Player Classic - Home Cinema is by far the most resource-friendly, stable and customizable software movie player out there. VLC is what I recommend to noobs since it doesn't require any tinkering around with, but for geeks and people who actually give a crap about quality, I recommend Media Player Classic - Home Cinema without hesitation. It's one of the only software media players that has support for the brand new video renderer MadVR which is even superior to Haali Renderer.

Then try mplayer, it's quite powerful.

Who cares? Sorry, but I feel that at this point in time, Linux does not have enough adequate alternative applications to the ones I run on Windows. This is only my opinion though (and the opinion of other people who use the apps I do), so don't let it bother you.

If you like it, use it. I like what I use.

You've never even heard of Foobar2000, Media Player Classic - Home Cinema or Miranda IM before, so the above doesn't mean anything to me. How would you know what the 'equivalent' is if you've never even used these apps I mentioned? For the record, the only pay software I run on my computer is Adobe PhotoShop. All the rest is freeware and open-source. I can give a huge list of the apps I run on my system if you want since you're obviously looking in the wrong places for freeware open-source Windows applications.

I've heard of all of those aside from MPC-Home Cinema. I haven't played much with foobar, but I've tried Miranda and disliked it. I have certain niche apps that aren't available as Windows freeware, or if they are it's irrelevant because they're also available on Linux. And I like having ssh built-in, along with easy access to better and more varied developer tools.

Stick to using a better operating system (whichever linux distro you use) if you'd like. You'll just have to not let the compromise of running inferior software on your computer bother you.

Right, my "inferior" software that is fast, secure, never crashes and does everything I want it to do.

Miranda IM, Foobar2000 and Media Player Classic - Home Cinema are only part of the reason why I don't use Linux. I never even mentioned IMGBurn (which is the best burning freeware app IMO) or Exact Audio Copy, which have no comparable Linux alternatives. Exact Audio Copy is used by some Linux users, but it has to be run through Wine. Supposedly IMGBurn has major stability issues when run through Wine.

Brasero works fine for me. There are plenty of other burning apps. K3B comes highly recommended.

I'd simply feel like I wasn't getting the most out of my computer if I'd not have Miranda IM, Media Player Classic - Home Cinema, IMGBurn, Foobar2000 or Exact Audio Copy on my system since I know that these apps are the criterion when it comes to apps of their corresponding type.

I'd feel like I wasn't getting the most out of my computer if I didn't have the clean, intuitive interface of GNOME, the speed, stability, and security Linux offers, and a vast repository system that gives me access to thousands of completely free programs with just a few keystrokes along with providing a universal, automated way of keeping everything up to date.

It's customizable, yes, but not nearly as much as Miranda IM.

I already told you that Windows is bloated, so I don't see why you randomly decided to state this..... I don't have an operating system preference to be honest with you, I only have software preferences. I use Windows operating systems strictly because I can run my choice programs on it.

If I try it out, I'll tell you what I think. I won't assume that it's crap until I use it and give my honest opinion on it.

You like Pidgin yet dislike Miranda IM? Is it because Miranda IM has lower aesthetic value than Pidgin, or what? The only thing Pidgin has over Miranda is higher aesthetic value, that's all. The client is not very stable at all (it doesn't crash as much as it used to, but it's buggy as hell), it uses up way more ram than Miranda, has way less plugins available for it than Miranda, it gets updated way less frequently than Miranda....shall I go on? It's simply an inferior highly overrated multi-protocol instant messenger.

Just like my software. The only thing though is that there's simply no adequate alternative apps out for Linux out of all those apps I'd mentioned at the moment, so yes, it is inferior.

IMGBurn is pretty much a flawless program.

I found this doing a quick Google search:

I've seen this covered in other places, but it never worked for me until today, so I thought I'd share my solution.

First off, why would anyone want to use ImgBurn on Linux? Well, I'm not very fond of the linux disc burning programs (k3b and Brasero for example). Brasero refuses to ackowledge the existence of my dvd burner. k3b will burn, but verification is hit or miss. The discs it says failed to verify have all been verified on windows machines using ImgBurn, and they work when I put them to use. Brasero can verify images using md5 sums, but it gives me the same result as k3b; failure. So I can't trust things I burn with k3b, but when I use ImgBurn on Windows, it always works. If ImgBurn says the disc is bad, the disc is bad; otherwise, it's good.

Hmmm..... :P

Lightning UK (who is the developer of IMGBurn) is one of the most highly respected people in the software world. IMGBurn is stable as software can get, is extremely lean and is way better than pay bloatware like Ahead Nero Burning Rom.

Nice, but for me personally, the software I run on my computer is a hell of a lot more important than the operating system I am using. Windows XPs speed, stability and security is adequate enough in my opinion. It's the software I truly care about since, well, any operating system with no software installed on it would be useless whether it be Windows, Linux or Mac. Give me an adequate operating system that can run the best software available on it, and I'll be content. Some of the best software for Linux may be good, but hardly any of it is as good as many of the Windows-only apps I run like Foobar, Media Player Classic, IMGBurn, etc. since these are unsurpassed at the moment in my opinion, and the opinion of well, nearly anyone who's used those apps.

The two of us must just be using our computers for different purposes. For what I do, Linux works great, OS X is mostly workable, and Windows is completely unsatisfactory. If the opposite is true for you, then you are probably have different needs than I do. So use the right tool for the job. Windows works for you- great, keep using it. I'll keep using Linux. One of Debian's main release goals for Squeeze is to make hardware support suck less on MacTel laptops, so I'll cross my fingers and hope they meet that goal. If they do, Linux will have pretty much reached perfection for my purposes.

But on the topic of Pidign: I really haven't run into all that many bugs in it that I can think of, and I've used it quite heavily. I guess, as with anything, YMMV.
