I'm planning to dump everything I have onto this hard drive from everything I have backed-up on DVDs from since last year. Any suggestions on what should I do with a 1TB hard drive?

I have some ideas planned, but I wanted to see if you folks have any suggestions.

backups mostly. Of everything that matters including DVDs and stuff. You can even do incremental backups of your computer nowadays. Think of a 'time machine' (tm) of sorts.

What I did with my 500GB hard drive was to use it to store all my photos, also DVD/CD images of important software/games in case I lose the disks. I also installed clonezilla on it (using the version that is meant for USB flash drives, but it works with external hard drives as well). Then I can make whole images of my computers' hard drives and restore them.

One thing.

Just one thing.

Organize!

If you want to find things quickly (or at all...;), give some thought to how you'll stuff them in there.
I have a program that creates a folder for almost every function (thousands of directories), and boy is it a pain finding anything...;)

If you collect enough stuff, eventually you'll have multiple copies of the same thing...

I use a pretty simple organization method, first, what is it? Vidoes? ok, make a vido folder. Then in that, tv shows and movies. Then, in each of those a folder with said tv shows or movies name. Keeps it simple enough for me.

And a 1tb is awesome, it'll take time to fill that puppy up.

after all, what's the use of having everything if you can't find it?...;)

Organise? Don't be silly - just throw everything on there.

I wouldn't have problems filling a TB hard drive. Give me a week and I'll show you how large you "think" it is. Think of 1GB as today's 1TB... Large for most things, but for many people like me, it's easy to fill up and need another. and another

I would take all your CD's with software and files on them an put them on the drive. (Of course convert software to .iso files. Then regularly back-up hard drive and store important stuff you have to have at all times. (Birth Information, Important School/ Business Docs, ect. And of course save about 200GB just in case your friends computer crashes and he/she needs a data back-up Of course though I would also encrypt with a password for security. Also important pictures and music you don't want to lose.
