when my wife plays one of the facebook games, the fan speed will speed up dramatically. This is the only time this will occur. I can use it all day long without the fan changing speeds or increasing power but when she's on that game, it will.

Any tips or solutions?

Do you do any gaming on the computer whatsoever? ...outside of the facebook games?

I'm willing to bet that it's just the computer compensating for all the extra lifting it has to do when running the game in question. It makes the system run hotter (cpu/gpu) as it works harder. Pop onto youtube and pull up a video, and run it in HD (720p, or above)

I'm willing to bet you'll hear the fan for that, too...

Good Luck!

I used to do some gaming on it. BF 1942, Crysis (played perfectly), FEAR + Perseus Mandate, Doom 3. I don't remember there being a fan issue. I have a 1 gig video card. Nvidia GEforce 9800.

And I'm watching a youtube video in 1080p and there's nothing going on with the fan. Just buffering.

Sorry, I only recommended the youtube thing because I was assuming that there was no 'gaming' going on there... You're apparently not a noob, so I don't have to worry about making no sense.

I really do know better than to assume... The fan would be speeding up for any of those games that you played, too...

Okay: Well, I would look and make sure that the drivers for your video card are up to date, just to be safe and really the only thing I can think of is that the game that your wife plays may do most of it's 'lifting' on the cpu, which (maybe) has another fan. See if you can find out which fan is the offending one... Makes sense that you wouldn't hear it playing your games... Do you have a way to monitor the temp of your cpu? Find out if that game causes it to spike?

Sorry, it's hard to guess without seeing... It's nothing I'd really worry about, so long as your system is cooling appropriately... if it sounds 'funny', look into getting a replacement... Nothing is worse than cooking your stuff.

I have two suggestions.

One, download coretemp, and keep an eye on your temperature readings.

Secondly, check the fan in question and possibly see about replacing it. It could just be going bad.
