I have recently watched this advertisement for women to get into science and i found it kinda fun, not because i'm sexist and think they shouldn't embrace science but because of all the stereotypes that they used in this video.

and heres a video of what an actual female astronomer thinks about this video

This is representative of the state we're in as a culture. Superficiality and short attention spans over substance and dedication, looks over content.
I think most people in marketing can't even grasp the concept of feeling a deep passion and following it, they're so entrenched in the world of their little manipulative lies with which they prod and nudge the consumer's brain.

Oh god that horrid video.

I mean, I could see how it could relate to some very glamour obsessed middle school girls. While it doesn't really make science look attractive or interesting in any way, I guess it could help them to see that scientists don't have to be nerdy or unfeminine, thus freeing them up to pursue their secret interest in science. But, personally? I'm just imagining people in heels tripping and breaking expensive equipment, though there is one postdoc in my lab who wears low wedges and doesn't seem to have a problem.

On balance, science has been furthered more by men than women. This is not to overlook or ignore the important contributions to science made by women (Madam Curie, for example who one -two- nobel prizes). But statistically it is more of a male field than a female fields.

I think this is more about promoting science to women as a field of study - it is a problem that there aren't as many women in science. I studied in medicine and qualified as a doctor, and I'll be starting a degree in mathematics next year, but this advert wouldn't have influenced my decision. Mainly because people who spend that much time on their appearance probably aren't hitting the books as much as they should.
