Crazy Heart

Great acting, and a fascinating glimpse into the American Country and Western sub-culture.

Moulin Rouge

The beginning of the movie (1st 45 min.) looked very promising, but the further into the movie I got, the less I enjoyed it. I actually felt a little relieved when the ending rolled around.

Mamma Mia!

I didn't like this at all. I know it's based entirely around ABBA songs, but I felt it would have done better as a regular movie instead of a musical. Even then, I wouldn't have watched it as it's not quirky or weird enough for my tastes. Besides, there was something kind of unsettling about watching Meryl Streep running around and singing, probably because she looks a little bit like my mom.

Finding Neverland

This movie was sweet. I loved the character of James Barry, not only because he was played by, y'know, Johnny Depp, but also because he was an adult who wasn't afraid to play pretend and get in touch with his imagination. I could strongly identify with that.

Death of a Ghost Hunter
- Was a bit disappointing. Wanted to like it, but it just didn't vibe right with me. The characters were rather irritating and it did a poor job of describing actual ghost hunting. (Actually it shows what NOT to do in ghost hunting)

Night of the Living Dead
-Fairly enjoyable, even if several characters acted like complete morons. Best watched after a few drinks I suppose.

Mulholland Drive - David Lynch
Holy crap David Lynch is an amazing man. The movie was a little more... erm... explicit... than I was expecting, but wow. Just loved it. I have a feeling it will get even better upon repeated viewings.

Life is Sweet (1991 directed by Mike Leigh) - I saw this last night and It was definately worth watching. It was my kind of humour and made me laugh.

"Sunrise" by F.W. Murnau - Beautifully photographed and with some pretty neat visual stylization. A melodramatic story, but still very affecting.

"The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes" by the Quay Brothers - Another very stylized film with some really neat elements, but the story is quite opaque and while probably worth watching, I think they pay too much attention to the style and not enough to the content. Guy Maddin does this kind of thing with more of a sense of humor.

"The French Connection" by William Friedkin - What awful people. I'm not sure if there is anyone you are actually supposed to like in this film. It's worth watching for some aspects of the film making, but Gene Hackman's character seems no better than the criminals he is pursuing.

I´ve seen Great Balls of Fire! (1989) with Dennis Quaid as Jerry Lee Lewis and Winona Ryder as his 13 year old wife. It is a good movie Dennis Quaid is fine playing Jerry Lee I didn´t know he was that eccentric (as the movie portrays him) and crazy to marry a 13 year old. I liked the movie cause I like anything about rock ´n roll.

not really "into" movies/film in general, but i did watch "beyond the sea" hoping to see something relevant to my favorite male singer/entertainer, but was disappointed by the artsy/fartsy approach kevin spacey took with this thing.

Just finished watching The Adventures of Baron Munchausen on TV. I've never watched a Terry Gilliam film all the way to the end, unless you count Monty Python and the Holy Grail (which he co-directed with Terry Jones), and this was pretty good stuff. Couple of special effects failures, but very impressive, given the BS the production went through. Great performances from John Neville as Baron Munchausen, Eric Idle as Bertholt, Sarah Polley as Sally Salt, Peter Jeffrey as the Sultan, and Jonathan Pryce being a wonderfully nasty SOB as Horatio Jackson, who is a far more dastardly and, dare I say, believable villain than Elliott Carver from Tomorrow Never Dies.

The real Jerry Lee Lewis came from a part of the country where men not only married 13 year old women but married their 13 year old sisters.

Been watching too many films lately:

"Downfall" about Hitler's final day in his bunker, getting just a little bit paranoid and nuts. Bruno Ganz does a great job as Hitler.

"Father And Son" by Alexander Sokurov This along with "Mother and Son" and "The Second Circle" is a disturbingly intimate depiction of the relationship between children and their parents. I don't know if it's my Aspie tendencies or if NTs would find this film uncomfortably intimate. The film is good in many ways, but the father and son in the story seem strangely close.

Surrogates - not sure what I thought of it, some angles were good philosophically, some were iffy. Was impressed by Rahda Mitchell's acting, if I hadn't looked it up on Imdb I doubt I would have even recognized her.
