:( Now every time you go to any section of the forum, there are huge, Autism talk tv banners. It's very distracting. Also, whenever you go to any page, the Autism Talk Tv images flash in front of your face, which is also distracting. And, to add to that, if you aren't logged in, and annoying banner flashes up saying to log in or register.

I miss the old wrong planet. It was simple but effective. Not everything is different.

The login/register prompt is pretty obnoxious, because while it persists it is impossible to click on any of the links to the subforums. Since it doesn't follow you as you scroll down the screen, if you forget to dismiss it and go down searching for a forum, you then have to scroll back up to the top and click on the small x to be rid of it (and the x is small enough that it is a mild nuisance to dismiss the thing).

This means that, if you have no intention of creating an account on WP, you have to waste a little bit of time every time you go to the page that lists the subforums.

I hate them both.

They are very annoying.

The login popup seems to have been added to force people to log in, and there are an infinite number of possible reasons why a person might not want to log in, like if they're in a public place.

The talk tv bar seems to have been added to make people stop viewing the forums and to only view the talk tv. If you are trying to make the forums more useful and encourage people to post here then it's not good to put a big distracting thing near the top of the page in the middle.

If you use an ad blocker you can block them. I block them both.

Also, the text in the top navigation bar is much too large and distracting. It should be 12px. It is a navigation bar and navigation bars should never make it hard to focus on the content of the page.

The most important part of the page should be the most visible.

The second most important part of the page should be the second most visible thing.

The third most important part of the page should be the third most visible thing.

Et cetera.

Things which point to other pages should be smaller and less noticeable, unless they are temporary urgent notices.

I used to post at some forums that were created in the 1990s. The site had about the same number of members that this site currently has. The site's owner made it so most of the page was taken up by things that weren't part of the forums, and after about three years almost no one came to the site anymore.

Actually, no. That's true for you, I presume (I assume you are being honest and accurate). But not for me. So, not for everyone.

For me: There's two blue strips, one for Autism talk TV, and one for an article. And they aren't huge (wide, but not tall). And they only appear on the forum home page, not on any other pages. And nothing flashing. (Well, the ad at the top of the page has moving graphics, but that's something separate.)

So, sounds like for you it's showing up very different than me.

On my other browser (internet explorer 8) the whole website fails to work at all. I get the gray bar, and the ad above it, and that's it. Now THAT would be annoying if that was the browser I usually use.

Now, the login box is annoying, on those rare times I read without logging in. Rarely an issue. But annoying when it is.

I voted other, because the strips for autism talk TV and the article don't bother me, but I dislike the login popup. If I were seeing what you describe, though, I very well might have voted that I dislike both.

and there you have it, matt. Those that are doing the arranging are arranging it as they see their priorities for the site.

All the weird buttons, renegade appearing articles, popups are very visually distracting and difficult to deal with.

I agree, the blue banners and stuff are crap. Alex put them there to make us look at other parts of the site, but if anything, they make me want to avoid as much of it as possible.

Agreed.

I don't see the Talk TV banner, ( Adblock-plus must be blocking it ) but I do get the pop-up window to "Login or Register", and yes it is annoying to have to click on it over and over again as move from forum to forum on the site, when all I want to do is read, review recent posts, check new threads etc, and don't need to log in.

And yes, the demand that I login is putting me off not only from logging in, because it feels like a completely unnecessary demand/intrusion in my use of the site, but as you say is putting me off coming here.

It distances me from the site, ( as do the big bars at the top so that see less of the threads on a quick view of forums but that at least doesn't "demand" my attention and response in the same way ), by making me feel like a visitor each time.

Don't understand why alex wants us all to log-in each time; what's the point?

I often read posts on Wrongplanet without logging in. The Login/Register pop up window is a bit intrusive if I have to keep clicking the "X" on the right hand corner whenever I come on to the forum without logging in and when I switch to a different section.

I hate both the TV talk bars and the Login pop up. I too read this site when not logged in and that log in box is very intrusive.

The TV talk bars are not needed, I already watched the videos when the bars weren't around. Now the the TV talk bars are in my face and make me want to ignore such intrusive visionary styles.

For some reason it doesn't bother me. I ignore the top banners. Plus under my browser, it automatically collapse when I go on the forum. I see it and then it collapse. But when I am not logged in, this little window pops up saying to login. That can be annoying.

Looks like 94% of people are agreeing that it's not cool. I just logged in so that annoying thing would go away. :( I'm thinking i might post here as often, and that sucks.

Its very annoying on a iPad, yet it seems ok on my PC and it doesn't seem to be such a big deal to me.

I was actually relieved to see the login box (there was an IP conflict which made it look like I was IP banned from even reading the forums), but I can see how it would get annoying (having it come up once is OK, but from what I can gather it appears on every page) and the two blue bars tend to open up briefly whenever I go on a page, rather distracting), so I voted for not liking them.

This is not at all perfect - more a work in progress:

Code:
/* Zap rubbish at top of pages */
.demo {
   visibility: collapse!important;
   display:inline!important;
   width:1px!important;
   height:1px!important;
}

I'm not too sure why, but I've managed to get rid of the stuff, but it still leaves a blank patch where the stuff wants to display. At least it's a little less distracting.
