I hated English because none of it made sense, especially all the poems that I thought were about one thing but turned out to be about many completely unrelated things. It didn't help that my teacher just handed out stacks of notes and told us to read the novel and AQA Anthology over and over again. I ended up scraping a C and D at English Literature and English Language GCSE, respectively and I despised it so much I chose not to re-take it in sixth form to get my grades up.
poetry really is about your interpratation 8O You and the teacher could both be right, because it's not just one thing, it's so many things :D It's like trying to count all the stars in the universe :P

I did actually think of saying that as well! Perhaps it should be changed to rubidium! Muahahahahaha!

But just because I hate English Literature, it doesn't mean that I'm not succeeding in it. I am confident for an A grade in both GCSE English and English Literature, although my teacher is constantly pushing me to get an A*.
Tell your teacher to shut up then  If you're getting an A, that's pretty darn good, and the pressure is NOT helping you.

I hate literature. It is so unrelated to anything... I had to suffer through so much German literature in school, that it made me hate the things we read and many woo subjects as well. Our teachers always said you could write anything in the tests as long as you can find arguments for it - however, those who disagreed with the teacher mysteriously got worse marks.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to destroy those darned books when I've finished with them?

I may consider buying a firecracker (or two) and blowing those books up! Or, should I try to get some rubidium, put it on the books, and pour water over it? Or should I just give them back to my teacher at the end and say, "I think you'll need them more than I do!"

I LOVE English lit because it is a very abstract and woolly subject

Perhaps I should blow them up with some firecrackers and sell the remains on eBay! Or send them to Blendtec to use in their next 'Will it blend?' video!

I like reading but I hate literature classes. Literature instructors (and art instructors as well) seem to me to often have chips on their shoulders against people in scientific and technical fields and thus like to f*ck with our heads with subjective questions that drive me crazy.

I didn't like my honors literature classes that I took in high school because of all the reasons in the first post, especially the abstract reason.

I absolutely hate fiction, but I'm actually really good at writing in one way: I don't make mechanical mistakes like in grammar and punctuation. Unfortunately this is not enough. I also have to be able to argue about abstract issues and make emotional connections with various elements in a novel in a way in which normal people have no issues, but which for me is very difficult.

I scored very well on the verbal and writing sections of the SAT and ACT, but I still hate and and doing poorly in AP Lit. I have an extreme dislike for victorian literature, which made up the majority of the assigned reading in my class.

English is subjective. It's not the teacher's fault.

I'm working on my last credit of high school right now and it's British Literature. It was horrible at first (especially with everything in Old English). I'm about half-way through it now and I can say it has gotten easier. The English isn't so old and the stories are actually kind of interesting. The book I'm reading right now is the abridged version of 'Jane Eyre'. I just started reading that and it's great!

English Lit not a problem, Interpreting Lit thats a problem. Like you've done when you know the meaning to some of the old english words there is zero problem with it because if needed you can sub the words out.

I had a hard time with AMERICAN literature, so I would struggle even harder with ENGLISH literature, especially the ones with old English.
