I don't hate it, I just suck at it.
HA HA but the thing is i came first in my grade and in the top 5% of the State (i don't know where in that top percent) for the major compulsory high school English exam. there were over 300 people in my grade at the time.

But nonetheless my teacher still believes I am quite incapable of doing any well in english.
(if you saw any of the things I have had to write this year you would understand why) :D

I always go extremely well in english exams, but ANYTHING to do literature or writing just  ... I HATE ITT!! !!
I have a problem with putting thoughts into words, I don't think in words, more visually.

After completing my sophomore year in high school in 2003, my parents had me take an english course at Harvard Summer School at Harvard University which was called "Expository Writing". That course was not like any high school english course.

I was compelled by the professor to read some huge dense books in 2 frickin months and learn how to write arguments (comparing one author's ideas on a given subject with those of the other). I got a C+ after completing to course, but the taking the course importantly gave me an opportunity to discover what college was really like and to decide whether or not to major in english in college. Amazingly, I did not decide to major in english or take english literature courses as liberal arts requirements. Because I cant read 10 huge books in 4 months. Hell no!

because i'm a hyperlexic i love to read. in fact AS a hyperlexic you could say i'm predisposed to reading. but my English classes were hell for me. not because it was hard for me, rather the opposite. i found most of it base level. it's because of these classes i tend to resent looking for symbolism in any work, written or otherwise. i kind of see it as intellectual BSing cause i would just write whatever came into my head during the essay portions and that seemed to do it.

it also probably doesn't help that most of the books we read seemed to come from Oprah's book club. books we covered were The Color of Water, The Color Purple, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and There Are No Children Here. Basically a bunch of books about the suffering of others (mainly black people and women). Not to diminish anything the authors put into their works but...sheesh, isn't there anything else? as if reading for a class wasn't enough of a chore already this makes it worse.

I've had a few English classes since that have the Oprah's book club reading list and I've resented all of them. My last one we had to read The English Patient, a book I hate with a white hot passion. But it sums up the kind of books I wish classes didn't make kids read: books that use the oppression or suffering of others to manipulate our emotions. we might as well have sat around and watched Lifetime.

my English classes also almost turned me off Ray Bradbury. I remember because we had to read Dandelion Wine in class and that was my first Bradbury book. and let me tell you, I hate analyzing symbolism and the symbolism is so thick in this book you could drizzle it over waffles. I hated Bradbury for the longest time until I read Farenheit 451, which was WAY better. why couldn't we read that in class?

oh yea, and cause my school was so PC we never read Catcher in the Rye. i read it on my own before i graduated and going through that book in a week or two was better than four years of high school English.

What I hate about my literature teachers (both French and English) is that they don't understand anything when I ask them the norms of our grades. :D

I consider grades as vectors, for two people whose grades are identical in norm doesn't mean that they made the same mistakes, therefore their mistakes give a direction to a grade and giving vectorial components to it. Also, I consider intelligence as a vectorial value.

I love reading but can't stand poetry. Can't understand even the simplest poem.

Of Mice and Men isn't really too bad. Try reading "Waiting for Godot." Then you'll really appreciate Of Mice and Men.

Personally I only like stuff post 1945 . . . *whistles*

Wow, you're doing the same as me...Mice and Men and poems by Carol whatsherface xD I /hated/ doing that!! (I did it last year in Year 10, got Language this year - trust me, that's no better x.x)

But I hated doing it...Poems over and over, analysing which had metaphors, what was the theme, how do these two show imagery? Lalala...And Mice and Men? Gee, I got so sick of writing about that!

Does anyone else have trouble in exams understanding the question, or is just me?
