My entire life I have had an extremely difficult time finding work. Especially recently. I've been in a state of rather intense melancholia as of late. But last Friday, I went to a hiring event at a chain coffee store here very excited to FINALLY get my life back together. I rode my bike(for want of an alternative) to the event and had what I considered to be a reasonably good interview. Now, I have seen threads here and elsewhere that introverts in general, and Apsies especially tend to over think what they say so I made a point to answer the interviewers questions immediately. Also, I told him that I was available to work in any store in town, any shift, any day of the week. I left with a good feeling for the first time in a long while that I'd hear from them soon. He told me I'd hear back by Friday. I get a voicemail today saying "all the positions have been filled" and they'd retain my application. Now, I understand that I am not qualified to be an aerospace engineer, or a computer developer but COFFEE? REALLY??? I've been a coffee drinker for 16 YEARS and yet somehow I am not qualified to serve it for a living. It's not like you need a degree in thermodynamics to work there! How hard is "make coffee, take cup, fill cup, try to smile?" So, WP what did I do wrong? Was I too available? Thanks for any help.

I think what you did wrong is that you didn't get selected. There are 10 other people who had the same interview. Only one of you is gonna get lucky. But you understand the basic idea behind it, which is that the job sucks, it's just a coffee job, so don't obsess over what to say. You don't in fact need to know anything about thermodynamics. Just answer the questions as simply and as stress free as possible.

Mindslave is right. That's why quantity is also very important in a job search.

Also, answering immediately is not required. You're allowed to think for a moment, and organize your thoughts. Obviously, this will not apply when you are asked how old you are, but if you are asked about your experience... I think of my years in scouting, countless service projects, similar jobs... it takes me a moment to organize the relevant parts into a direct format that properly addresses the question.
