I think it is ok to teach him that there is a time and a place for the same song repetition. FOr instance, at home when he is with family, but if he invites a friend, they might get irritated by it. I see no harm in teaching him about the times and places it is appropriate.

How is this hurting anyone? I am nearly 40 and I still do this, always have. Not for 8 hours straight but I do listen to the same song multiple times in a row.

I like the way the songs make me feel.

Worth noting I only do it either with headphones or if no one else is around.

Thanks everyone
I tired to address everyone here.
I really appreciate the support/insight.
I know when I am tired it is harder for me to see clearly, but I know he is fine. In his own home he should be able to do whatever his heart pleases....
And if that is listening to AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" over and over again..then so be it!
Wish there was the peace sign emoticon....

Yes..we have taught/encouraged him the need to change it up a bit when his cousins/friends come over and even when his sister is in the same room(this is a shared space he listens in).

MusicIsLife2Me
Your experience makes sense to me.
I don't want to take it away from him. He does have a deep love a music too.

InThisTogether
Thanks for the interesting website link. I will check that out here in a bit.

My son goes to sleep to his radio too. This is the only time he does not have the same song going interestingly enough. It is a old vintage radio with no cassette or cd player available. I always did listen to the radio too to sleep when I was younger as well.
Old adult body though wont stay asleep now if I try it ;)

ASDMommyASDKid
Yes..Right
I know it must obviously have benefits to him, but sometimes I second guess myself and worry.
I am not annoyed by it honestly, it just makes me worry.

btbnnyr
I think you are right. Thanks :)

League_Girl
I am sorry you had that experience with your Mother. I never want to create a bad memory like that for my son.
I am here for him always to talk endlessly about his loves. It is a challenge for me to stay focused on his topic to hear it day after day, but I am here and will always be.
I hope you can heal from your Mom's misunderstanding.

littlelily613
Thanks for sharing your experience!

Shellfish
I can relate in many ways.

lady_katie
That is exactly like me. I worry I could be doing better all the time for my son. I would feel frustrated to miss out on info that could help me do better.
SO I am always grateful for the insight from others. It keeps me thinking and my brain fresh!

Simmian7
I do not know if there is *anything* wrong with the repetition. I just worry-a lot ;)

MMJMOM
I wish we could do headphones.
But due to the sensory aspect of his ASD, headphones will NEVER go on his ears.
We tried that and it was not fun trying to encourage the boy to wear them.
We decided to wear them ourselves with our own music ;)

Not hurting anyone..just worrying that I need to redirect him to something else BECAUSE it is for 6-8 hours a day. This is NOT an exaggeration.
I have listened to the same song over before too, but maybe 3-4 times, but not for hours.
I like the feel of the song too :)

I do this, but normally in a loop with 4-5 songs or an album. I listen to the same album for months in a row.

For me, besides the pleasure of listening to the same songs, it has also something to do with me being very easily distracted by sounds. I can not listen to "talking" radio and work at the same time. Even if I am just cooking or walking through a room with some sort of "talking (talk show, interview etc) I will stop and listen. I am a compulsive listener as much as I am a compulsive reader. If I have to do something sensible I have to know the music, otherwise I will listen to the lyrics. Music helps me concentrate.

Besides that music also helps me drown some of my thoughts - I have several different thoughts in the head at the same time, and sometimes it is just nice to be able to let go of some of them and listen to music.

You sound a lot like my son.
He can hear EVERYTHING.
He is a voracious reader AND listens very well too.
I never thought of the aspect of needing to learn something/needing to know the music being played. This makes perfect sense to me.
Interesting.
Thanks for sharing. 8)

I never understood why anyone would NOT listen to the same songs over and over...the way they experience music must be very different from mine.

I do this a lot, myself, especially with certain songs on my MP3 player. When I synced "Sugar Rush" from the Wreck It Ralph soundtrack onto my MP3 player, I listened to it over and over, and I did the same thing when I synced the Four Top's "Loco in Acapulco" to it last summer and Badly Drawn Boy's "All Possibilities" earlier this week. Right now I basically have "A Life Without You (Is No Life At All)" from Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story on repeat bcuz to me, it's a soothing song....I like the "Oh my darling" chorus in the background, and I just love John C. Reilly's singing voice. I find that I tend to listen to certain songs on repeat if they have certain chords or an addictive beat to them, get me pumped, or soothe me when I'm anxious or sad. I hope this helped. :D

I just looked this up because I do this all the time, and have been listening to Sail by AWOLNATION for 9hrs a day at work for the past 2 weeks. I wasn't sure if it was AS related or normal. A quick Google search and nothing coming up about people asking if it was normal to replay a song for hours and I realized this must not be normal, lol. Oh well! I find it helps me concentrate my thoughts especially when I don't like whatever task I have at hand. If however I'm working on my obsession, aka genealogy, I need no help concentrating, lol. Beyond that it just feels right and it makes me feel good :)

I have listened to the same songs over and over since I was tiny.

My grandmother about went hoarse singing "Suanee River."

I had "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" on a repeating loop cassette tape in high school. Ditto "I Shall Be Released."

I have been known to drive for hundreds of miles listening to Hazel Dickens squall out "Coal Miner's Grave."

It is soothing. People call it wallowing in whatever and criticize me harshly for it. I try very hard to do it when alone in the car with sleeping children, or through ear phones.

I'm thinking of starting to tell them they're welcome to turn it off...

...but if they do, I'm going to start singing.

As someone who grew up autistic, I know I am glad that my parents didn't try to make me into their version of normal. People with autism often like repetition and that doesn't change even if our NT families are annoyed by it. I used to watch the same movie over and over again all day long so often that I could say the entire 2 hour script with the movie on or off. That is what I liked to do, I think if my parents tried to stop me, it probably would have led to meltdowns. If the music isn't stopping him from completing his homework properly, I don't see why it should be an issue. If it is distracting him, though, that is different.

I do the same. I rewatch movies, I reread books and I used to ask people to retell the same joke over and over. I think some of the emotions we get from music or movies or jokes are the same: buildup of tension, and then a release (punchline, or a musical note). Perhaps the predictability adds something to it for autistic people or spectrumites.

Hey, if I don't listen to the same song over and over, it's just going to repeat in my head anyway, and I'll probably be humming it all day too.
