I didn't read the article but the phrase "Life isn't fair" just means that you don't always get what you deserve, either good or bad. It's why somebody can be a good person who tries to do the right thing all the time and never harms anyone else and still have a life full of bad things happening to them. It's why somebody can be scum of the earth and hurt everybody they come in contact with and not care either way about it and still have all sorts of good things happen to them. It's why one baby is born to a family with no money and abusive parents and has genes that say he's going to get childhood leukemia and die before he's 10 and another baby is born healthy into the lap of luxury with parents who love and care for him. Neither baby has done anything either way so far to deserve or not deserve anything so they are equally deserving, but one gets something good and the other gets something bad.
It's all about just not getting what you deserve. People say that Karma will get you, but that's not always true.

I am certain that it will - and this is one of the reasons it isn't a good measure: it's supposed to measure intellectual capacity, and if it succeeded at that, it would remain static throughout someone's life. There is all kinds of evidence that it is not static, and I am guessing there are many reasons for this beyond correct decoding of the instructions.
