Almost exactly 15 months after referral .... a diagnosis of Asperger's.
The diagnosis wasn't a surprise, after all I've had over a year to become something of an expert on Asperger's and Autism.
What was more of a surprise was that my husband and my mother, previously in vehement denial, were both accepting of the diagnosis!
Although the delay was pretty lengthy, in practical terms it wasn't so bad as my son's school and the SLT were already putting various strategies in place. The diagnosis means that we can now openly mention that he is AS, and some of the strategies can be formalised more than they were before.
My son is 7 at the moment, and in Primary 3. The school say that the diagnosis will be of more significance when he comes to make the transition to Secondary School.
Today's meeting lasted for 2 1/2 hours, and was very detailed, positive and encouraging. I liked it when they said that they would be "using his strengths to address his weaknesses".
The report did highlight concerns about his sensory issues, but as these are seen as related but not part of his AS, these will have to be assessed by Occupational Therapy, and he already has a referral to OT.
As a point of interest, his diagnosis was done in terms of the WHO (World Health Organisation) ICD.10 criteria, rather than DSM IV which is used in the US. We're in Scotland.
