Liking a video game series but disliking the fanbase
my brother and i are true Nintendo fans. we love everything Nintendo, and we never complain.
Exactly. People say there's too much Mario. I say without him, the industry means nothing.

I think something that's not been so bad recently, but has been quite systematically flawed of them for a while, is not necessarily a lot of Mario, but the overinvestment of the Mario franchise at the expense of other IPs. Fire Emblem, for example- one of my all time favourite IPs next to Zelda, has been running ever since the NES days (albeit not in the west), yet I never even knew of its existence until around '09, and only because I chanced upon it in a ROM collection I was given. F-Zero GX is up there as one of the best racing games of all time (I would argue THE best), and yet how many people have actually ever played it? Who, aside from us diehard Nintendo fans, has even heard of Earthbound? And I'm pretty sure a great amount of people who adore Final Fantasy have never come across Golden Sun. Not to mention, Starfox fans right now are kind of twiddling their thumbs.
And yet, at the same time, they felt happy advertising arguably inferior games such as Mario Strikers Football or Mario Golf and other niche Mario titles, and churning them out rather regularly (how many Marioparties do we need, seriously).
This is what frustrates me most, as a Nintendo fan. Did you know that they were actually considering axing the Fire Emblem series if Awakening didn't sell enough? And then, lo and behold, they set out and actually make a half decent advertising campaign for it (which is something none of the other games in the franchise had the luxury of), and bam, they absolutely eviscerate the sales targets they set for themselves. And anyone who remembers 2011 remembers operation rainfall and how Nintendo didn't feel safe releasing what turned out to be 3 really well recieved titles in the west, and to this day getting a new copy of Xenoblade is something thats monopolised on due to how highly sought it is.
Now, as I said, this is a problem that's been significantly less in recent years, specifically since the introduction of the 3DS (I fanboyed all over the place when the Kid Icarus and Awakening ads were actually on the TV), but it remains to be seen if Nintendo actually plans to stick to that in the coming years. Hopefully, they've perhaps realised that they can't rely on Smash Bros to sell all of their more obscure games, because as great as Smash is, I never REALLY wanted to try out any of the other franchises until I actually hunted down trailers for them and went, huh, this looks awesome (F Zero GX is the best example of this).

Despite not being a major fan of the Call of Duty franchise, or its fanbase, I used to really enjoy playing Black Ops 1 online. Whenever I joined a match, I would always mute everyone so that I could concentrate on the game and not have to listen to a bunch of foul-mouthed 10-year-olds screaming into their mics.
I couldn't agree more about Ninty. I think it's great that they produce plenty of Mario and Zelda titles, but it shouldn't come at the expense of their other ips. They advertise Mario and Zelda titles like crazy too, but neglect to advertise the ips that need to be promoted, and then they stop producing said ips due to low sales, because they don't think there's enough interest. I hate to burst your bubble Ninty, but anyone with half a brain can see where you screw up time and again. I'm glad some of Ninty's other ips have found a home on the 3ds. The 3ds has had better software support across the board. If anyone wonders why people are buying 3ds systems, but not wiius, I think the mystery has been solved.
Anyways, one fanbase that irks me, that I also have the displeasure of being a part of is the Megaten fanbase. Apparently it's ok to enjoy Megaten titles, but people like myself who also happen to enjoy Persona games are looked upon with disdain for some reason. I would kindly like to point out that if I hadn't come across Persona 3 and 4, I wouldn't have checked out any Megaten titles, so those people can bite me.
As a long time Battlefield player, I really have little patience for the fan-base... at least the vocal part.
I used to play a sniper (now Recon) in Battlefield 2. In Battlefield 3, the Recon class was seriously nerfed because it had previously been unbalanced in a console spinoff game (Battlefield: Bad Company 2).
... Which in itself made very little meaning for a PC player on 64 player maps, as BC2 was a 24 player game. A clear case of Consolitis.
I went online intent to discuss this with other gamers, but whenever anyone suggested that the class balance was wrong, all you would get was "BUSH WOOKIE!! !" and "PTFO!". Few had the intellectual capacity to recognize that the Recon class was almost completely useless.
Come Battlefield 4, and the Recon class has been massively buffed and is now actually useful. Shows how much the fan-base knows.
In my case, it's not a matter of hating the community of any particular game series, but instead hating the community of an entire genre.
The main one for me is the fighting genre. Both 2D fighters like SF4, and 3D ones like tekken. That community, the fighting game community as a whole.... I can say with great sincerity at I consider them to be the most self-centered, egotistical bunch of asshats that ever was.
Many of them are so sure of their own skill, and moreso, their own knowledge, that presenting even a slightly different opinion or point of view gets you yelled at and hit with their favorite word ever, "scrub". They have extremely specific ways of doing things.... Most of them learn combos and tricks and such not on their own, but merely by mimicking other high ranking players, or by poring over frame gibberish for weeks on end. And they group up at very specific sites.
And if you do not use these methods, or if you do not frequent these all-important sites, then clearly, you cannot POSSIBLY have any true skill, since their way of doing it is CLEARLY the only way that works. And thus, you are a lowly scrub, fit only to lick the mud off the boots of these grand masters of mimicry and frame data.
And the funny part of this is what happens if you break these sacred rules.... Yet still win. I've played fighting games to death myself. So many. The one I'm best at by far is Guilty Gear. I generally play at a high level in any fighting game that I take an interest in, but that one is my best. Very high level in that one. Yet, both for that one and any of the others at I play, I follow literally none of those most sacred of rules. My combos and tricks are entirely my own, as I never watch match/tournament videos, and I come up with them over time on my own. And I wouldn't know frame data if you dumped a cart filled with printouts of it on me.
But as a rule, when I clash against the higher level members of that community, chances are, I'm going to win. Done it many, many times by this point. With a total lack of mimicry and pre-ordained attack patterns, my play style is very chaotic and aggressive, and my reaction speed is as fast as it gets. And it turns out that all the frame data in the world doesn't do a damn thing for you if you cannot connect with the attacks properly, or if your attacks are getting interrupted, or if you're just getting hit so fast that you have no time to do anything. Yet even when I get a crushing victory against that type of player, they say, no, it was just luck, because I didn't use any truly good combos and didn't work with the frame gibberish or follow a specific play style, and those are the only things that work, so clearly, it wasn't real skill, and I'm just a lowly scrub. That I've done it so very many times over never seems to register in this. Even derpier is if I beat the same player many times in a row. This tends to lead to outright rage quitting, with swearing and yelling, and in one memorable incident, a controller being launched at the table while shrieking an f-bomb at the top of his lungs in a huge room fully people.
And heaven forbid you use a controller instead of a stick. The worst sin of them all.
And then there's the way they treat new players..... It's just atrocious. If you're a new player, you can expect to be insulted, belittled, told to put the game down and never play it again, and.... The list goes on. Helping new players learn is often out of the question for these twits.
And finally, they have no concept of fun whatsoever. Everything within these games is Serious Business. And I've never understood WHY. I play these because I enjoy them. They are fun.... I wouldn't bother otherwise. Joking, bantering, laughing.... These things should happen when playing these. But it's rare that I see it much from that group. And these are GAMES above all else.... Why play them at all of you're not having fun doing so?
I could keep ranting about this for pages and pages, but I'll stop here. Good to get that all put though. I absolutely love the genre, but dealing with any of that group can honestly just suck the enjoyment right out of it.
.....even worse thoug, FAR worse, is the MOBA community. But that is a whole other rant...

People still play Civ 2? I remember playing that a lot as a kid, though instead of playing the game the proper way, I would play with a bunch of cheats, and wage all out war against the computer.

APB Reloaded... Great game. Amazing customization options to show off in front of thousands of players BECAUSE IT'S A FREE MMO. problem with it, the usual. The player base consists of ragers... that's about it. If they start losing and you are their enemy, it's because you must be a hacker. If they are losing and you are on their team, it's because you are a noob. it's never their own fault.
CoD zombie mode. NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO PLAY AND THEY WILL LEAVE YOU ALONE IN THE GAME IF YOU LEAVE THEM TO DIE! sad really :/ back in WaW i was a partnered as a clan leader for a zombie modding community and most of them just made maps, rarely played them.
League of Legends.... the "Never my fault" rule applies again... not gonna lie, i'm one of those people... but it's rarely not my fault...

Yeah, typical MMO stupidity there. I've never been fond of pick up groups for that reason. ....of course, I've no fiends that give a damn about these, so a lot of the time I just end up soloing. Which is fine by me as grouping usually involves a lot of waiting.

Yeah you would be surprised by the fanbase that is still in some of the older games.

I know a lot of older games still have communities, I'm just surprised that there are people who play the older Civ games since I have a friend who's a Civ freak and he hasn't even played anything older than Civ 3.

Ironically, one of the best memories I ever had of playing a video game was Street Fighter II at an arcade. I was around 10, and I was taking turns playing it with a couple of more experienced 10-year-olds. They gave me tons of tips because they could tell I was a newbie, and even when I started battling it out against them, they never belittled me even when I lost miserably.
Odd that a group of 10-year-olds can act more like men than an entire community of people who are supposedly more mature than that.
