I have no idea if any of you will have heard of it, but Hatoful Boyfriend was a very weird visual novel that came out in English in 2012. It was part dating sin, part mystery(with the mystery as an unlockable mode) and entirely pigeon. Almost all of the characters, except for the protagonist, were birds. Surprisingly, it was extremely well written and I would recommend that you try it.

Hatoful Boyfriend Holiday Star is the sequel to Hatoful Boyfriend and was released very recently. It is entirely mystery and pretty much completely linear. It has actual villains(of sorts) for all of its arcs and was a spectacular read. I would also recommend trying this game out. Both of them are only about £3/$5 and there are free demos available of both. Definitely worth it if you can deal with, or even take amusement from, the premise. I liked it enough to make the human visualisation of one of the characters, Dr. Iwamine Shuu, my profile picture.

Has anyone else here ever played either of the games, and if so, what did you think of them?

Firstly, I would recommend telling us where to find them?

Also - is Urist supposed to be a Dwarf Fortress reference?

Edit: Okay, posting requirement has been reached, links added now!

Urist is a Dwarf Fortress reference.

I don't think it's that many posts; maybe you can put it up in a few hours?

I felt HoliStar was much inferior to the original Hatoful. But it seems to me to be more of a fanservice/ridiculous take on the characters (as nutty as that sounds, since the original was a parody otome game about dating oversized sentient pigeons). I get that it's a homage to 'Night on the Galactic Railroad', but still.

Hatoful Boyfriend is a genius mix of parody and actual 'kick-you-in-the-feelings' drama. I started playing it for the lolz; I stayed after getting invested in the actual storyline. It was a very bizarre experience, and I loved it.

I personally found Holiday Star to be just as good as the original, especially since I'm not hugely into dating sims. I didn't feel that any of the main characters were really changed, although perhaps exaggerated. Sakuya seemed even more image obsessed than before and Yuuya had an anti-material rifle. There were some really good, touching moments in it too, like the original, such as pretty much everything with Nageki and Hitori.
