For horror games where fighting is an option, I think its important that the controls be unnecessarily difficult. As in a nightmare, it takes too long to raise your weapon or run away.
The old tank controls weren't bad controls. People don't like them, because they're different, but as a survival horror veteran, I can tell you that being able to back away and shoot, or swing your weapon, is a must in this genre. Of course, there are better control schemes now. The modern system of being able to move forward and backwards with ease wasn't a thing back then.
As far as survival horror goes, I love the classics from the 5th and 6th gens, hate the 7th gen take on the genre, and think I love the modern take on it. Mindless zombie slaying blood and gore tests with little else, just don't qualify as survival horror in my book. The scares have to be there, or it doesn't work for me.
