I just got a N64 today, I hooked it up, and the TV says no signal. I have the red white and yellow cables plugged into a thing that plugs into the SCART port and in the console, but nope. I've tried to get up AV1, HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 on the TV, but no signal. The Vaseline trick didn't work. Help?

Did you try the system on another TV?

Did you plug the cables into the system until they click?

Either your cables are busted or your system is busted.

I've pushed thw cable in until they click but I haven't tried it on any other TVs yet.
I'm using a HD TV, so should I get an older one?

As long as your TV has the proper ports you are fine.

Hmmm just make sure everything is plugged in tightly and try again.
If your HDTV doesn't show it, try turning it off and on again on the proper channel.

What do you mean by "the proper ports"?

^^I think he means the A/V jacks (yellow, white, red) as opposed to the newer HDMI or Composite ports.

Well, I have them connected to this thing that connects to the SCART port. It's the same cables that came with the console.
Also, I heard Nintendo 64s don't boot up without a Game Pak, so maybe it's the copy of Banjo-Kazooie i'm using [The only game that we ordered because it was the only one we could find cheap]. Should I use the Vaseline trick on it? I have a spare Q-tip.

I don't really know what the problem might be. I'll just keep my mouth shut for now...

Does the power light on the system at least turn on when you power it up?
It's below the N64 logo on the front between controller port 2 and 3.

We don't really have SCART here in the US, so I can't help you much =)

I don't know what the "vaseline trick" is, but if your cart is dirty, clean it with some rubbing alcohol. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't say "no signal" if it was the game, though, it would just be a black screen.

If you can find a CRT around, that would be your best bet.

The vaseline trick is putting Vaseline on the cable that connects to the TV and the port it goes into.

The source on the TV will be AV1 or AV2 etc.

There should be an input/output switch on the body of the adapter. If so, make sure it's set it to input.

The system is at least working.

Make sure you have the system plugged into the right ports and unplug it and plug it back in.
If that doesn't work try a different TV.
If that doesn't work then you need a new set of AV cables.

Okay, here's what we did today.
I got to my dad's house [he has a bunch of TVs, by the way] I discovered GameCube and N64 TV cables are the same, so we tried the one that came with our GameCube and nothing happened, but the GameCube worked fine with the N64's cables. We tried it on an older TV and it didn't work. We blew the cartridge and it didn't work. So we know the cables are working, but if both the console and cable are working, that means we need to go deeper and into the console. That means opening this bad boy up and see if anything inside is messing up.
If not, we need a new N64.
