Why are so many Americans obsessed with guns?

First off I'll state that they ARE an obsession with me and always have been. It's a typical Asperger's type obsession and mine has always been with guns. I couldn't do anything about it even if I wanted to.

Not that many Americans are actually obsessed with guns or other weapons although gun ownership is higher than most or even all other countries.
Most of them are kept for personal protection.

I'm fine with guns for home use. WHat I'm not fine with is how easy it is for minors and criminals to get them...and the fact that some are trying to get laws passed allowing them in bars. Drunks with guns, that sounds like an action movie and if you shoot (heh, pun) a movie you'll have one!

For minors and criminals to get them as in buy them?

For a dealer(including at a gun show) to sell someone a firearm they must;
1. Have the buyer provide proof of age and residency; 18 for rifles or shotguns and 21 for handguns.
2. Have the buyer fill out and sign an ATF form 4473. Part of this form is a questionnaire on personal history including illegal drug use, mental health, criminal record, etc. Lying about anything on this form is a felony.
3. Perform an online or phone in NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System) check on the buyer at buyer expense. The NICS must approve all transfers.
4. Waiting periods on all handgun transfers that varies by state.

The quickest way for a gun dealer to lose his FFL license (or worse) is to fail to follow the governing laws.

Precisely the way it should be.

Because they're fascinating from both a mechanical and, at times, aesthetic perspective.

My turn. Why are trolls so fixated on posting one sentence questions under threads dealing with controversial topics?

Did not know that Raptor. How intensive are the background checks though?

If I recall correctly, they show any offences the person has been convicted of and that's about it. I could be wrong though.

Criminal record, warrants, restraining orders, domestic violence issues, etc. There is a system set up for this so it only takes a few minutes.
