People who give in to racism and prejudice may just be dumb.

I think "passing judgement" upon people at first glance is something that we all do. It's clinging to that initial judgement that is wrong.

Judging people ahead of time on the basis of their external is just stupid. If people are removed from their skin, then they die equally. (And good grief, no, I'm not actually suggesting any such thing ever be done.)

Seriously though, it is stupid when people talk about "all white people this" "gavatchos that" and talking so much nonsense whether in terms of the racism of the 1960's continually portrayed upon stereotypes of characters from the south eastern United States or in the current socially acceptable forms of racism against the "majority". Every bit of it is stupid nonsense.
I agree. And a lot of these studies' results can be skewed and read the wrong way if there is an already existing political bias. :?

Statistics are always read in the light of whatever motives politicians currently are moved by.

I can see how someone could be considered stupid if their racism was taught, but what if the racism was the result of personal experiences?

It would be the same as drawing conclusions based on the superficial, except without the formatting of statistical perniciousness. It's still wrong on principle alone, even if it is based on real experiences with people who happen to be red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, black, brown, grey, turquoise, white, or whatever else. Color codes are only good for judging resistors, capacitors, and inductors, but not people.

It makes sense - what people can't understand they tend to avoid for the sake of falling face first into a known risk. The dumb would likely often need more protective/negative generalization to get by.

I get the impression they're simply stating that it plays a big role, not that it applies to all sources of racism.

I think elementary school is the source of most people's racist thoughts.

On the side I get the impression that the 'You're racist whether you know it or not' preachings probably aren't helping things either.

i don't see how that would specifically be the case. do you have some kind of source for that idea?

i remember reading recently that exposure to faces of many ethnicities during infancy can assist a person with differentiating between faces of each ethnicity as they get older. it is called the "Other Race Effect".

http://medicalxpress.com/news/2011-05-i ... -race.html

i believe this phenomenon may play a role in racism, as people who cannot differentiate between ethnicites that look "different" will be more racist against them due to the "In-Group Advantage". it makes sense because if a person cannot recognise the faces (and apparently emotions) of the "Out-Group", then the person may depersonalise and generalise about that group.

How so? From the teachers, the other students? Or both?
I personally see racism as coming from the family and social peer groups.

They mean to say that everyone thinks in racist terms anyway, which is false as far as I'm concerned, as a further justification for their own racism. It's more often used by comedians like Carlos Mencia, but I've heard coworkers in food service, retail, and warehouse jobs express essentially the same sentiment about how they think everyone's racist and thus since "everyone else is" they feel justified in being racist themselves.

No kidding, they're basically serving to keep the crap burning rather than putting it out.
