THIS is why people need guns for self defense
Wrt the gun lobby: why is it legally more dangerous to maim someone using a knife or martial arts skills, than it is to maim them with a gun?
Idiots escalate situations that quickly, not guns. A responsible gun owner uses and thinks of his gun as a last resort, when all else fails it is there to save his life.
No clue as to the second part. Knives are wonderful things for those who don't like to carry a gun or who want a step between fists/feet and bullets.

A-MEN!
Totally missed the point. I'm not for gun control by the way, the way guns are entrenched into American culture I know such an attempt would fail even worse than Prohibition. I don't however feel that guns are necessary for self defense and I loathe this country's 'gun culture'.

Because the knife and fist industries don't have as effective a lobby. Pisses me off too, actually; I think I've even mentioned it to you specifically before. I can legally carry my pistols, but my less lethal blackjacks, knuckdusters, saps, many of my knives, etc are all illegal to carry with no possibility of obtaining a license. California and New York are predictably at the outer edge of ridiculousness in this of course, banning such "deadly" weapons as blowguns, slingshots and throwing stars. Can anyone here ever recall having heard of a single crime involving a blowgun or throwing star?

In the case of the woman murdered in her own home by an intruder, it was either her life of his. Unfortunately, it was hers. In situations like that, which do occur more than you might like to think, there is no negotiation! I'm not even talking carrying weapons everywhere you go. I'm talking about having them at home to defend your property and yourself against dangerous intruders.

A good 9.5 times out of 10 a gun probably won't be necessary, but for the other 5% of times when it *is* necessary... that's when people get killed, and at that point it rarely matters whether a gun is even involved. It's very easy to kill someone with your bare hands by mistake, one wrong fall if you push someone too hard and they can crack their head off of some concrete and be dead in less than an hour.
Say you got mobbed by 5 or 6 guys. They don't want your money they just want to beat you senseless (which happens, unfortunately). If you're unarmed, what exactly do you intend to do to avoid getting hospitalized or killed?

I'll be honest. First I would try to appeal to whatever reason they may have. Probably a futile act, yes. Then I would try to run away. If that didn't work, I would yell for help and fight back.
Really though. I think in that case, learning martial arts would be of more help than a gun. I mean, if you had a gun, you don't think six people could overpower you and turn it on you?
One shot in to the closest guys chest and everyone around knows where you are and that there is trouble, *and* the other guys are very likely to get the hell out of there when they realise that continuing the conflict could lead to a critical existence failure
.
With martial arts, you'd best be good. VERY good. All it takes is one mistake and you could be on the ground getting kicked in to oblivion by a bunch of guys who are now likely VERY angry at having be punched around.

That is, if you're good with a gun, no? I can barely pitch a baseball, let alone a gun.
Again, I'm against banning guns, I just don't think it's reasonable to carry one around with you wherever you go. It actually sounds pretty paranoid and insane to me, especially carrying one around the suburbs and into Wal-Mart.
You'd have to be decent with a gun, but you'd hardly need to be a crack shot who trains 3 hours a day. If your gun is easily reached, you should be able to get the bullet in to his chest before they even register the gun is in your hand (which takes a second or two for most people). Aiming at close range is also fairly simple, line up the sights on centre mass and squeeze the trigger. At close range, you would have to try to miss.
Paranoid, maybe. But, the paranoid survive more often than the unprepared.

My order of battle goes something like this:
Brain
Keyboard
Body language
Mouth
Gun
Knife
Impact tool
Foot
Fist
It takes relatively minor effort to be proficient with those tools, effort I feel is worth it.

Having a gun would make me feel a lot more secure. I don't think I'd be comfortable carrying it with me out of the house but it would give me a way to defend myself if someone broke into my home. As it is now if someone broke in I'd be defenseless and would just have to hope I got a chance to call the police and that the police got there fast enough before anything horrible was done to me or I was dead.
I'm more of a tazer type guy, just because its pretty damn effective at taking down an attacker and a lot less damaging if something goes wrong. Plus, if you buy the right kind you can knock your adversary out with electricity then beat him/her to death with the handle afterwards.
