I watched a documentary a while back about a Doctor in British Columbia who was using ayahuasca to help treat people with drug/alcohol addictions and he was quite successful. Unfortunately the government made him stop because it wasn't an approved treatment, obviously, even though I don't think ayahuasca is technically illegal here. I'm not sure how they could make something like DMT illegal, since it pretty much exists inside every living thing, but that's how we roll I guess. :)

Psychedelics really shouldnt be illegal. Theyre not addictive for the vast majority of people (correct me if im wrong) andtheyre pretty much harmless. I know there is alot of crossover though. Isn't ketamine considered a psychedelic? Ive heard of people injecting the stuff. 8O which would lead me to conclude that it is somewhat addictive.

I really think that legalisation is the only way to go. The only alternative is forcing people to submit to urine tests at random and imprisoning users. How successful do you think that would be ?

It may be classified as such, but ketamine can kill you if you're abusing it. I could never do anything like that, I prefer my marijuana. lol Personally I don't feel like marijuana is addicting, at least not for me. I smoke it pretty much every day (and have for years) and it doesn't have any negative impacts on my life or my ability to live my life. I smoke it at the end of the day when I know I have nowhere else I have to be, in the comfort of my own home. This past winter was so harsh that I actually ran out of marijuana at one point and didn't feel like going out to get more so I went 5 or 6 days without it and felt no withdrawl symptoms at all even though I'd been smoking it every day for several years at that point. The only thing I noticed is that I had trouble staying asleep when I went to bed at night, I'd still fall asleep just fine, but I'd wake up 4 hours into my sleep, which wasn't normal for me, however this only lasted a couple of nights and then I was staying asleep just fine, as normal. Marijuana has always helped me regulate my sleep in that way and also blocks dreams (which makes it useful for people suffering from PTSD--I never remember my dreams when I'm smoking, although this isn't why I smoke it).

This isn't to say that someone can't be psychologically addicted to marijuana, but people can be psychologically addicted to things like sex too and we don't make that illegal.

For the Canadians out there, all you have to do is NOT vote for Stephen Harper in next year's federal election and we'll probably see legal marijuana in Canada very soon after that. The Liberal Party and the Green Party are both for legalisation, the NDP would probably at least decriminalise, but I think we'd see it legalised under them as well.

Say no to the Conservative Party of Canada!

And that is my political message for the day. lol

This is true, and Salvia. Technically peyote isn't even illegal in Canada. If you extract the mescaline from it then that would be illegal, but if you just have the actual dried cactus to brew into a tea or something, then it's not illegal, it falls into a legal grey area.

I personally dont use any drugs other than caffeine SSRI's and cigarettes. I just dont want the financial drain and im very neurotic about my health. I also dont like the idea of becoming desensitised to the normal range of pleasures by using substances which produce heightened experience.

Still drugs are extremely fascinating.

I can honestly say that the worst experience I ever had with a drug was the 5 year experience I had with an SSRI lol, but to each their own. I know they do help some people, but the withdrawal I experienced when I finally weaned myself off the SSRI was one of the most unpleasant things I've ever gone through.

Yes ive experienced it too its very unpleasant...

I think pot actually makes REM phase more shallow so that you never sleep deeply enough to dream. It affects sleep quality negatively. At least so says the BBC article I read lol

Hrmm, that's not entirely true. The deep/restorative stage of sleeping is called 'slow-wave sleep' and studies show that marijuana actually increases this stage of sleep while decreasing the amount of REM sleep you experience in a night. So the effect on REM cycle doesn't actually prevent you from experiencing a deep/restorative sleep through the night and I'm actually not sure that there is any agreement on what the purpose of REM sleep actually is from what I've read (although I could be wrong).

Quote:
The studies on cannabis and sleep that were conducted in the 1970?s (see Roehrs and Roth, 2011), give some information about the possible affects of cannabis on sleep. Low doses of THC (4 to 20 mg) mildly decreased REM sleep in both regular users and nonusers. Interestingly, deep sleep was increased when cannabis was initially used but this effect disappeared after repeated use. With high doses of THC (50 to 210 mg) REM sleep was decreased in both regular users and nonusers. Total sleep time was not affected but deep sleep was decreased. When THC was stopped some rebound in REM sleep was found with reduced sleep time and increased time to fall asleep.

Interesting... I've definitely never felt that my quality of sleep was suffering while using marijuana. I know the marijuana we have nowadays is quite different than the marijuana they were smoking in the 60's/70's (often much higher levels of THC nowadays where as back then there was more of a balance between the THC and CBD), so I'm not sure if that would have had an effect on the studies from that long ago, I only know how I feel.

if this is true, it could explain why marijuana is so effective at treating ptsd nightmares. sometimes, if you're chronically plagued with traumatic nightmares, less REM sleep is a good thing.
