Had to look that one up. No, it doesnt seem to be something I'd enjoy.

Actually, I used to watch The Walton's on some oldies channel when I'd get home in the morning after night shift a few years ago. I don't mind saying I rather enjoyed it. It had its flaws, though and some of the characters were rather annoying.

Here Comes Honey-boo-boo.

It took you or one of your liberal brethren for me to even know this piece of work even existed. I think this was when you all had your drawers in knots over something one of the Duck Dynasty people said or did. Rest assured that anything with a goofy title like "Here Comes Honey-boo-boo" will be summarily rejected by me on the grounds of the name itself.
I never saw Duck Dynasty until you all were whining about it last December or whenever it was.

And Lawrence Welk.

That's for those that are in their late 80's or 90's. I don't think it was ever aired in my lifetime and it's just as well.

Lawrence Welk still reruns on PBS here, guess we have plenty of old folks to watch it.
I still have not watched Dumb Dynasty, watched Clash of the Ozarks instead. For laughs only.
I guess it will bring tourists to Hardy.

I think I've been there or close enough to it. It's the only place that I got poison ivy, chigger bites, and sunburn all at once. :x

You must have missed out on the seed tick season.
I don't get chiggers or poison ivy, thank goodness.People here call the chiggers red bugs.
The small biting gnats called noseeums are the worst to me.They get in your eyes and ears.

Some people are impervious to poison ivy but how can anyone be chigger proof if there are chiggers around?

The place we actually were was Cherokee Village which is very close to Hardy. The old man got some notion to move there from someone he worked with at the time. I have no idea what possessed him to want to move there. We rented a house by one of those lakes there for like a week. I got the chigger bites and poison ivy from messing around in the woods by the lake and the sunburn from being in or around the water.
It sucked! :x

Why does it matter if an argument against gay marriage is "rational" or not? It seems some folks view "rationality" as a flaming sword of justice that can only be wielded by the "good" guys.

I believe it's possible for someone to make a "rational" argument, completely free of logical errors, for exterminating the Jews, but it doesn't make the aforesaid sentiment "right" in any other sense. Additional, just because an argument may involve some level of emotion it doesn't mean said argument is automatically "wrong."

"Rational" =/= "right"

People can present me with perfectly objective, rational arguments against gay marriage, and I'm more than happy to kick holes in them.

I always thought that I most likely did get bit by them, but just didn't have a reaction to them like some people. They are arachnids, and I don't have problems with recluse bites either. My ex and kids are not bothered by them.I've read that it depends on the amout of carbon dioxide you breathe out, supposedly that's what attracts them.My regular temp is 97 so maybe they are attracted to warmer people.I've been with people that got covered in ticks and I got only a few.
There is already a fine crop of speck back ticks this year,if I'm pulling off around a half a dozen a day,it's going to be a bad year.
The other day I passed some tourist bikers on the road,I've never seen faces as sunburned as those guys,I bet they had no idea what was happening. The wind must have felt cooling, but they were so red it was unreal looking.I felt sorry for them.Boy were they going to be surprised when they stopped to pee and saw themselves in a mirror.
I've been in that area,my ex had realatives at Evening Shade.Mammoth Spring is pretty cool to visit.

Reverse psychology, sarcasm, and feigned indifference, oh my! Really, you're the one who's "left the thread" several times not only to come back, so I don't think you get to talk about anyone needing the last word.

The only "rational" argument against gay marriage is that religious scriptures state that homosexuality is sinful and define marriage as a monogmous heterosexual relationship. It hinges entirely on the pressuppositions that 1) religion is actually true(which has yet to be proven or disproven) and 2) that marriage is a religious institution. Presupposition #2 is false in the US.

No, there are actually several rational arguments, which were laid out earlier in the thread, and further, the rationality of the religious argument has nothing whatsoever to do with the truth or untruth of religion, instead referring to the reasoning process used to arrive at a conclusion. You seem to like dictionaries, this would be a good time to make use of one.

Don_Pedro_Zamacona wrote:
As I have stated before, separation of church and state is embedded in the US constitution which is the kernel of civil, criminal, and family law in America! Religious people see gay marriage as defiling what they view as a sacred rite. And now, the defeat of the DOMA confirms that the law does not recognize their authority on the legal contract of marriage.

Completely irrelevant to the point under discussion.

Don_Pedro_Zamacona wrote:
So what exactly IS the "rational" secular argument against gay marriage? Enough with the finger pointing at others. Just present your case. And no, I'm not going to dig through this entire thread to find it. If you posted it before, you can post it again.

Uh, no, I've made the argument repeatedly already, you're in no position to be making any demands here.

No one is making the argument you're attacking, that rational equals right; all I've argued, and this has been entirely because people keep challenging me on it, is that opposition to gay marriage is not necessarily irrational or homophobic, nothing more. All the groundwork is in the first few pages of the thread, the whole thing has been one big tangent since then because apparently formal logic is not the strong suit of a lot of people here, especially on an emotional topic.

I don't entirel disagree with these 5 points, but I dislike either side's hardliners for very similar reasons. You could say similar things about conservatives. For example:

1. Conservatives are happier because they ignore the suffering of others more often. Jaime Napier and John Jost, in the journal Psychological Science, “Liberals may be less happy than conservatives because they are less ideologically prepared to rationalize (or explain away) the degree of inequality in society.” The academic parlance for this is “system justification.” The article is fairly dense, but has plenty of data to back it up.

2. Conservatives cling desparately to tradition, no matter what the cost. There are reasons why people get together and and protest the traditions that encourage discrimination in the town square, treat marriage as a right for all people, and get angry when those less fortunate are dehumanized. Because conservatives tend to think they're smarter than all those still living who have the collected knowledge of centuries of science simply by virtue of being conservative, they tend to cling to conventions no matter how much disorder and havoc they create around themselves in the process.

3. Conservatives see people who disagree as evil. I don't think I need to explain this one. Any group that widely believes anyone who isn't christian cannot possible be moral pretty much sums it up.

4. Conservatives are religious to the point that they can easily justify the mistreatment of non-christians. See #3.

5. Conservatism encourages arrogance. See all of the above.

I dislike spending time with anyone who has such a narrow view of any group of humanity, conservative or liberal.

I've gotta disagree on this, though. People with narrow views, left or right, can be entertaining.

Entertaining at times, but only from a distance.

My major complaint with Liberals is that they have no problem spending lots of money that isn't theirs to promote social programs whos only apparent goal is to keep an army of social workers and case managers employed rather than actually help those who need it.

Quote:
1) They're unhappy: They do seem to be generally angry and take themselves too seriously.

2) Liberals don't care as much about tradition: They tend to consider traditional holidays like the 4th of July to be jingoistic and Christmas too Christian. If you mention tradition to them they go to extremes and assume you MUST obviously want to go back and live in the 19th century. To them, tradition is also a dog whistle for homophobia.

3) Liberals see people who disagree as evil: And how! You’re either with them or against then and to b against them is to be evil.
...
4) Liberals aren't very religious: They claim to be against all religion but hammer on Christianity the most. The ones that claim to be Christian often go to a certain church known to be charitable only to supplement their public assistance income. Seen it happen IRL enough.

5) Liberalism encourages arrogance: On this one I can’t honestly say that liberals lead the way. They are an arrogant lot but so are conservatives. I’ve been an arrogant prick on occasion and enjoyed it immensely.

Straw man. I am not a liberal myself, but most of my friends and family are, and I have heard very little of the attitudes and seen very little of the behaviours listed here. Neither o they seem to be common amongst high-profile liberals. Also, the article takes some of the characteristics of some members of a group and applies them to the entire group.
"Liberals are unhappy": evidence?
"Liberals don't care about tradition": challenging tradition can be a good thing. If nobody challenged traditional views, we would be stuck with the Divine Right of Kings and the Geocentric model of the universe.
"Liberals think conservatives are evil": It seems largely to be the other way round, with accusations of Communism by the right against the left, feminism being called "man-hating", etc. Both liberals and conservatives are guilty to some extent of believing their political opponents are evil.
"Liberals tend to be atheists": so what? Atheism is not intrinsically negative, and atheists can be good people.
"Liberalism encourages arrogance": yes, but only as much as any other political viewpoint. Raptor himself says it pretty well:
Quote:
On this one I can’t honestly say that liberals lead the way. They are an arrogant lot but so are conservatives. I’ve been an arrogant prick on occasion and enjoyed it immensely

Furthermore, perhaps most importantly, this constitutes an Argumentum ad Hominem, attacking liberals rather than liberalism. None of it forms a valid argument against liberalism itself.
