The president did nothing about it when it started. He didn't do what other countries were doing to stop the spread.

Also in America, people here are so obsessed about freedom that they will go Karen if you demand they wear a mask while in Asia, people there had no problems wearing masks and didn't Karen about it.

It has been up for states and towns to enforce the mask rule and social distancing rule.

Oh okay, but other countries have a lot of cases of covid in as well, so is the US worse than a lot of other contries, when it comes to covid?

There are various places to look at the approximate Coronavirus statistics each day. This website does well enough. As you can see, the US is number one in confirmed cases and deaths.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Of course some other countries may have inadequate testing resources or are deliberately hiding the scale of their outbreak. Its hard to say how true the figures from Brazil, Russia, China, and India are for example. Brazil and India may have far surpassed us in unconfirmed cases and deaths and we wouldn't know for years until scientists can study the outbreak scale in these nations.

Oh okay, but was the President suppose to tell people to wear a mask and social distance, or what else should he have done?

Yes and yes. He should have also committed to a strong federal response such as ramping up testing capacity sooner, establishing a nation wide contact tracing program, and the use of lockdowns like most other industrial nations that have the virus under better control (he left most of these up to state governors and they have had widely different approaches).

He should've listened to scientists and shut down borders in January.

One issue is that the US is a big country, the third largest by population in the world, so you’d expect it to have a lot of cases. That’s why it is generally better to use “per capita” measures.

The US is tenth in the world for deaths per capita. Eighth if you take out San Marino and Andorra.

In cases per capita, it is 8th, though again that includes San Marino as well as French Guiana (which is not a country, but part of France).

In tests per capita, it is 18th, or 13th if you take out non-countries. Inevitably many of the countries ahead of it are still microstates, but many of them are not.

In summary - while the US is doing badly, it isn’t the worst country in the world. That’s Qatar or Belgium or somewhere like that.

Very true, that is an important nuance to make. We are doing better than a few countries proportionally, and we're doing the worst based on raw amounts like total deaths.

Well it was said before the Americans are total "Karens" when it comes to wearing masks and social distancing. So if that is true... And if Donald Trump was a lot more responsible in his response to the virus, would Americans have actually listened to him then, if they are mostly Karens?

The interesting thing, though, is that if the entire country was working under the same guidelines you would expect a similar rate across the entire country.

Being that individual states implemented different rules\guidelines on top of the federal ones, you would need to take a state that had no additional restrictions (or only restrictions also used by other states) and compare it to the other states to try and determine if actions (or lack thereof) within a given state were a better (or worse) way to handle things: Maybe one (or more) states implemented some policy which inflated the number of deaths (or allowed greater spread of disease), and which affect the nations results, while not having been a national policy.

Thought I covered that indirectly in my other post about the lack of a unified national response. Those are all fascinating ideas and they almost certainly all have an effect. Think of all the error though from rule breakers though 8O .I kinda want to play around with that data. Maybe we should quit our day jobs and become strictly data scientists

After a midwestern earthquake that hit where I live hardly got any news coverage, I have lost all trust in national news outlets. It is clear that they just run on political agendas. I was exposed to Fox News for a bit recently and it’s clear that they are too biased in favor of Trump. Maybe that’s a big catalyst for why there are so many Trump supporters. People are being brainwashed by Fox News! The fact that they intentionally do this drives me insane.

I agree 100% but I also believe there is a strong political agenda behind everything reported on CNN, The Washington Post, The New York Times, etc

Face it, it's left wing propaganda vs right wing propaganda. Our country is in a propaganda war with itself and none of the news sources can be trusted. Frankly I think this hatrred towards Trump exists to distract us from real problems that neither Republicans or Democrats are able to solve.
