How is it that some atheists are good people?
I choose to remain unlabeled.
An ethereal philosophical position, as it were?
Definition of ethereal
2a : lacking material substance : immaterial, intangible https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ethereal
Hmmm.
Your strategy here:
1. Choose freely an adjective
2. Of three definitions of this word from Merriam-Webster, choose the second one, because it sounds invalidating.
And I remind you that it's an adjective of your choice.
Shrug. I don't enjoy a discussion based on random offending and invalidating instead of listening to arguments and exploring possible answers.
Apparently, my favorite games are exploration ones, while you prefer shooters. We can't have fun playing together.
<serious mode activated>
<sigh>
It was a joke.
I thought you were adult/worldly enough to appreciate it.
I used to be one of your mob.
I was an Olympic fence-sitter at one point in my life.
I am not saying you shouldn't take that approach yourself.
I am not saying it is invalid.
Your life,
Your choice.
To each their own.
I was just having a bit of fun banter with you.
How could anyone take what I said as a serious attack?
I will try to be more "Politically Correct" with you in future. <shrug>
You don't know me as well as I thought you did.
And vice versa.
Just an observation.
Not a criticism.
Vanilla is the preferred flavour these days with most people.
Whatcha gunna do?
I.E. I have "Confidence" in my atheistic belief system which has been derived through methodological reasoning rather than divine inspiration devoid of the reasoning mechanism/facility/faculty.
You are still using the word "belief."
Is atheism, even if based on your reasoning, only something you believe in?
I thought the following, from a recent post, explained my position nicely:
What are Faith and Reason? Faith is the belief in the truth of something that does not require any evidence and may not be provable by any empirical or rational means. Reason is the faculty of the mind through which we can logically come to rational conclusions. https://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Histori ... and_Reason
Quote:
Faith and reason are both sources of authority upon which beliefs can rest. Reason fundamentally is understood as the principles used for inquiring subjects from a methodological standpoint, whether it be moral, intellectual, or religious. Once demonstrated, a proposition or claim is ordinarily understood to be justified or authoritative.
Faith can be described as a stance or position that a particular claim is (at least presently) not capable of demonstration by invoking reason. As such, it is believed to involve a belief system that implies, or makes, either an implicit or explicit commitment on the part of the believer. This basis for a person's faith usually is understood to come from the authority of revelation or personal conviction. This revelation is either through some kind of direct infusion, or indirectly, such as the testimony of another source, or individual.
The basic impulse or incentive for this problem of faith and reason seems to come from the fact that the applied revelation or revelations on which most religions are based are interpreted in very sacred pronouncements steeped in canonical writings, or in an established oral tradition, and backed by a "divine" authority. These writings, stemming from oral traditions are often presented, narrative, parable, and sometimes discourse. This, for some reason, has given them in turn, some measure of immunity from reasonable or rational critique and evaluation. https://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Histori ... and_Reason
Pax.
Okay, Pepe, I'm glad you activated serious mode for a moment.
I wasn't comfortable with your "friendly banter". I find it mostly disruptive, as the discussion started to gain some subtleness I like.
It's like I was enjoying foie gras and you came and ladled a big spoon of chilli peppers on it.

I like "Chilli Peppers".
Well, it looks like I have to introduce myself again.
I am someone who doesn't take himself too seriously.
Most people have an inherent need for social respectability,
A need for social status.
I find this very amusing and enjoy taking "The Mickey" out of myself and, by proxy, out of other more pretentious non-individuals.
Life is absurd.
How can anyone truely take it seriously?
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts, https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/ ... ds-a-stage
For me, these discussions are a form of creative indulgence.
And for me, these discussions are not about winning or besting an opponent,
It is about self-discovery and unlocking further personal enlightenment.
It is not about an aggressive attacking campaign for Lebensraum,
It is about the cultivation and development of die Mutter-land.
I will, however, faithfully, err, I mean confidently and intelligently, defend my own demesne if others trespass,
But I have always valued the sovereignty of others.
Bottom line:
I'm a rooly, rooly good guy.
And so smart it hurts. (I've got a brain too big for my skull)
You just have to give me the benefit of the doubt.
And be tolerant of these creative aspie types.
BTW, You weren't comfortable with my "friendly banter" *to you*?
Or do I have to behave myself with everyone,
Your majesty?
D'oh!
Sorry.
Can't help myself,
Bad habits,
Don't you know?

Has got so many , bad habits
Well I'm off the rails

A hold on me
And I can't refuse
Because I always lose
Can't help myself

Well it just ain't right
That it's something I can't fight
I can't stop going out and having fun
Well I tried to be good,
But I knew I never could
Cause I've got more bad habits than anyone

I just got to splurge
I'm a slave to all my desires
Well I'm in a mess
Because I can't repress all of these

There is a function that lets you ignore the post of those you have difficulty with.
I have never used it but it is in the settings somewhere.
Problem solved.

I see no dichotomy between faith and reason. Maintaining a “reason only diet” makes assumptions about the human mind that are unrealistic. Everyone is forced to assume that the human mind perceived reality when that’s not logically necessarily the case. You yourself are incapable of proving that your mind works properly without external verification, and yet if your mind happens to NOT work properly, how do you know any apparent external verification is even real? The assumption that one’s sensory experience is reliable is never logical. Everything that both the religious and the atheist claim to know is based on faith.
Playing with definitions is annoying. I’ve gotten in the habit of using objectivist language, which can be uncool for some people because they get triggered when they’re called “selfish” when I see selfishness as a desired trait in others. Objectivist language is almost self-referential, a complete reordering of how people discuss philosophy and politics, something not everyone is open to doing.
Back in WP’s “strident atheist” era, there was one user who insisted on winning every single argument by decomposing EVERY SINGLE WORD into meaninglessness. His way of “winning” an argument hinged on his belief that if something could not be defined, it did not exist. “God” cannot be defined, therefore it’s gibberish. “Good,” “evil,” whatever. All gibberish. And because of his assumptions, by “definition” (haha) there could be no meaningful discussion (define “meaning”).
I don’t believe it’s right to block someone just because you dislike what they have to say. If I was scared of being offended, I’d stay the heck out of PPR. But this kid was a whole new level of annoying. That was the ONLY time I recall ever blocking another user.
All others, however, get reported.
There was a time in PPR when I was business as usual and ran afoul of the mods. I picked up on the fact I was being bullied, so I started making judicious use of the report button. Mods were getting more involved in taming the Wild West of PPR, so the most vocal atheists fled WP. The discussions are friendlier now, but not nearly as interesting.

Hmmm.
ethereal: intangible, does not mean it does not exist.
I was saying her philosophical position had no strength/kahunas/balls.
I didn't want to *spell* it out (again).
But you made me say it, again.
I got what you were trying to do. Your effort had flaws which I pointed out. It still has flaws.
Some people are seekers, rather than "knowers." You appear to be a "knower." The sad thing about being a "knower" is that you obviate the possibility of learning more about life. (said with loving kindness

In most cases, I'm sure they can go together.
The question is, what we do when they collide.
I understood importance of Copernican Revolution when I read polemics with Copernicus (including e.g. Martin Luther): their main arguments were that the Bible and ancient philosophers stated otherwise, so Copernicus must be wrong.
The question if Earth revolves around Sun or otherwise is, kinematically, just a question of coordinate frame. Of course, it changes the view a lot but behind it, there is another revolution:
Medieval philosophy and scholarship were all about interpreting authorities.
Copernican revolution gave mathematics and observations priority over any authorities.

I’ve not read through this thread yet, so I’m sorry for probably being redundant.
Via natural selection, it’s beneficial for a species to be decent to each other. We wouldn’t have survived without some cooperation and teamwork going on.
Primates groom each other and are usually loving parents. While I’m not eager to pick bugs off people and eat them any time soon, I can see how being kind and even altruistic would be a beneficial, hereditary trait.
I’m an atheist and am generally a good person (or so I’ve been told). ![]()

Firstly:
Consider context.
"Humour" has a "logic" of its own.
Jokes often, if not usually, defy logical progression.
Also, consider the progression of the conversation in this thread.
I was cruelly attacked by Mikah whose mission it was to "mindf**k" me. <sniffle>
I wasn't being a "knower",
I was being a "defender". <indignation>
Horrible, terrible, vicious theists.
They are so mean. <stamp foot> <anguish>
I have *always* maintained that there are "Different strokes for different folks".
"Have you not been paying attention?
Once again let me remind people of the principle of defending one's own,
Be it the truth, family, personal philosophy or one's last pair of clean underpants.
(Note how "The Truth" came first.)
I find your unfounded assertion of my "knowability", err, unfounded and will be consulting with my solicitor (yes, they are called "solicitors" here in Australia, and don't snicker) in regards to your slanderous, err, slander.
You obviously don't know who you are dealing with,
I.E. The all-knowing "Oracle of Truth".

OMG!
Xmas has come early!
Good to see you here again.

You are forgetting the benefits of: "Tough Luv".
You are forgetting the principle of: "Being Cruel to be Kind".
If I have to twist someone's arm, to breaking point, to get them to see the error of their way, so be it, err.
What's wrong with:
It's my way or the highway,
Whether one likes it or not,
But this re-education process would be saturated with all manner of luving, altruistic kindness a la Blazingstar.
BTW, you can "groom me" any time you wish,
Via humorous content.
If somebody wants to believe in God---let them believe in God.
If somebody wants to be an atheist----let them be an atheist.
I believe in evolution, and that the world is approximately 4.6 billion years old, and that there's no gods. If somebody doesn't believe that--fine. But I wouldn't want that person to twist my arm and demand that I believe what that person believes in.
I would simply say, for example, that no----I don't believe the world was created in 4004 BC, and that it was created through Divine impetus.
But that's all I would do.
I might further expound on that.....but I wouldn't twist the other person's arm.
