What's the point of the Bible if it's not to be taken literally by believers?

It provides a mythology that answers some very deep questions like: why do snakes go around on their bellies. Why do women have menstrual periods. And such like...

What exactly are my moral beliefs. What would you define my faith or religion as as?

As to what the point of the bible is? I think to give a people a common sense of morality. A handbook as I say filled with examples, stories of people getting it right or wrong. Various examples of cause and effect. Much justification and much instruction. It is a bit of a mismatch of such thoughts and ideals.

Getting bogged down in details and who did what and how is perhaps counter productive.
The ideas are what ought to be gained and used. Be good to your people and do good by them and treat them fairly and evenly. Protect your family and your community. Be a good and moral citizen.

Good values. I think that is all that needs to be taken from it.

As to Jesus being THE son of God? I think that is all PR.
