I'm from the south we never support the unions

We have a very different tradition in my part of the country, the Pacific Northwest. My Dad had been a staunch union man, and his Dad had been a member of the legendary Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), otherwise known as the Wobblies. Thanks to my Dad's union secured pay, he was able to by my Mom and me a house, and keep us in a middle class lifestyle.

That is probably the biggest win that an American Union has had in decades.

School cafeteria employees in the South can pick through the garbage for the pupils' leftovers, but, without proud Union protection, they have the value of any scraps removed from their pay.

I'm happy for your good fortune growing up. In my case, I think I have to credit my Dad's income and benefits, which had been won by the Steelworkers union, for our standard of living.

You may think so. The slaves might have disagreed.

And, your school cafeteria employees, who have the value of any salvaged scraps deducted from their pay, might be envious of the largesse that unions in the North have won for cafeteria employees.

I would be surprised that anyone that was voting for either Romney or Obama wouldn't be totally down with eating old food from the bottom of the barrel.

It's expired food

It may be small, compared to what our unionized ancestors won for us a century ago (e.g., 8-hour work day, an end to child labour, two weeks of paid vacation, weekends off, some health and safety problems addressed, social security retirement).

But, these days, a victory is still a victory, and we should all cherish it and rejoice.

Yum! Expired school cafeteria food! And, it is FREE!! !

As someone who isn't very well off, free food is nothing to be scoffed at (pardon the pun).

Eh, at least the food isn't going to waste. It's not like when something goes just a day over the expiration date it's suddenly a serious food poisoning risk (dairy products or re-heated food however, I'd be very careful on).

Years ago when I worked in the cafeteria for Gonzaga University as a pots and pans washer, one of my jobs was to toss uneaten food down the garbage disposal. Once, an Afghan refugee working with me was shocked, saying that a lot of people in the world were going without food, while we just threw it away. I couldn't even begin to disagree.
