^^^^Here's my take on things like that:

Satan was not put in hell to tempt us. Satan was there to be the punisher and guardian of hell. We make our own choices. He just gleefully accepts. Satan got the s**t job because he was the rebellious child. And that is his punishment.

That whole "The Devil made me do it" is just hypocritical excuse making for their bad decisions. A way of not taking responsibility for anything at all.

None of the above is a description of my personal faith system. Just an interpretation of things I have studied over the years.

I honestly don't see Satan is a tempter. I see him as the fallen, punished favorite that is serving penance by doing the worst job ever, forever.

Free will and people twisting good things to their own wants for power. Humankind does not need help in temptation. It is the few good that redeems use a species.

I believe the idea of Satan was twisted as a threat to hold sway. Give people an excuse.

"I have been tempted. Forgive me for I have sinned." Not "Forgive me because I did bad things on my own."

There would still be religion around, no matter what you believe. I was reading an article about atheism and it shocked me to learn that Seth Macfarlane was a Catholic turned atheist. Sounds like he hates religion.

It is a very pertinent point you raise about filling that void. And, usually, the void is filled with some sort of radicalism.

No matter what, there will be some sort of religion. Good or bad.

The only thing that bothers me is that people are to quick to actually see the real good that is done.

They only want to focus on the negatives in an attempt to sway opinion.

I acutally know a few.....Though not as vociferous as mainstream religions though and not real radicalism.
