in America, only if it is publicized widely and causes embarrassment to the service involved and/or the officer ain't worth his salt.

A field grade (or higher) officer is usually asked to resign quietly or get kicked out noisily.
They can also be re-assigned to a duties of minimal responsibility and visibility until they can retire.
If they really F up it can get uglier.

I remember a decade or so ago, the sergeant major of the army was demoted several steps and forced to resign/retire, when it was revealed that he had sexually harassed a fellow CSM and she spoke to the press about it after she retired.
