That is a pretty accurate description of politicians in general in my opnion. I don't even feel the need to add more to that statement. It says it all.

I resent that comparison!

How dare you compare us reptiles to such vile abominations?

Now, where did I put my "BAN" button?

I was going to suggest:

- Used car salesmen
- Drug dealers
- Serial killers
- Sith Lords
- Pop Musicians

... but it wouldn't be fair to portray used car salesmen, drug dealers, serial killers, Sith lords and even Pop musicians in as negative a light as... politicians.

In fact, I fear that the English language is currently incapable of demonstrating the magnitude of disapproval towards this category of individuals...

I think the word sociopath is the best term in the end, because that's what you have to be if you want to become really succesful in politics.

As a politician you must have the ability to play the dirtiest games known to humankind, you have to be a good liar, you have to be manipulative, you have to be able to sell yourself efficiently, you have to wipe out the competition without a second thought, it certainly helps if you come across as charming and charismatic and you have to pretend to be able and intelligent. With the emphasis on 'pretend' ofcourse. Last but not least; you have to be ruthlessly ambitious.

There are people with other insane personality traits who have a go at politics but they usually don't come far because they fall victim to the more ruthless and calculating ones. People with aspergers shouldn't even try to become a politician. That would only end up in disappointment and disaster.

It depends on the politician. The problem isn't politicians per sae but politicians who lack integrity, principle and moral fibre.

Recently in the UK we lost arguably one of the finest politicians we've ever had. Sadly his kind are few and far between.

During election campaigns I do not listen to a candidates speeches (any of them) because they will tell you whatever they think is going to win votes at the polls.
I only look at their voting records on bills and the bills they have introduced while in the office they currently hold and/or held in the past. That is the closest thing to an acid test of what they are made of. Call me pessimistic but I'm only looking for the lesser evil, not the best man (or woman) for the job since the best man rationale is naive and simpleminded.

Politicians are at their worst during election campains. That's the time when they become parodies of themselves.
Unbearable!

The only elections where I know my vote really counts are the county elections. You know who you are voting for.I vote for who I think is the most qualified, and it could be any political party.
Quite a few of our elected officials wound up in the pen later on,but what can you expect from politicians?

I used to vote dilegently except for yesterday, when the county elections in the country I live in took place. I just can't be bothered anymore. I wouldn't be able to make a sensible choice anyway. I don't follow the news anymore, I don't read newspapers and I haven't got a clue what the election program of the different political parties is nowadays. I just don't give a damn anymore. The party I used to vote for doens't deliver and the other political parties including their politicians don't appeal to me. I immediately switch channels when there are politicians on tv because the way they sell themselves as well as their party is way too predictable, incredibly boring, plain stupid and even downright nasty in some cases. To hell with them!

Politicians are people, with goals, who will exercise their best efforts to achieve those goals. The problem has become that the goal of getting elected is no longer aligned with the public's interest in electing individuals who can make the best decisions on public policy.

So long as the electorate is too lazy to demand better, politics won't change, because politicians and aspiring politicians are fixated on the goal of getting elected, rather than the goal of improving their communities. In theory the first provides the means to accomplish the second; but the contemporary political environment has changed that.

So if you tune out, you are part of the problem, and you are doing nothing to influence a solution.
