If you're too lazy for that, here's the DL:
Boy could've escaped pretty much whenever, he had four years and even had communication with authorities but DID NOT.

Article even states his captor was trying to teach him how to drive.

“When a young child is taken from his family and isolated and perhaps threatened, and those threats are backed up by violence—all that plays a tremendous role in silencing the child,” says Dr. Terri Weaver, associate professor of psychology at St. Louis University. Abductors “know how to create a paralyzing sense of fear so even when the captor is not present, the child feels he is omnipresent.” As a result, she argues, people should “withhold judgment and blame on this child.”

Wow.

If there's anyone out there in this position my heart goes to you, man...

Gotta love Stockholm Syndrome and possibly repressed thoughts and memories.

Tell me about it. Apparently, I'm owed 213 PSP's, 105 Xbox 360's, and a wii.

This is not the first kidnap story I've heard about where the victim ended up living willingly with the captor. I remember reading one story about a man who kept a woman locked up constantly and after years he brought her to visit her family. They were shocked to see her, she claimed to be married to this man and she returned home with him.

Even in her parents' home she couldn't ask for help. I can't even imagine... :(

I hated when the media asked "Why didn't he/they try to escape??"
No one knows what went on. Lot of psychological stuff goes on, maybe even physical. The boys are the victims. I really detest when the general public or especially the media says a dumb question like Why don't they escape/leave?

People just can not really understand others situations and only judge based on their own situation. And for most people its counterintuitive to remain a captive when there is opportunity to escape. Granted your right the boys were not free.

"Experiments have been done with lab rats, placing them in a cage with an electric grid on the bottom. At random intervals, the rat's feet get a mild shock, similar to a shock of static electricity we get from touching a door handle after walking over a plush carpet. The rat freaks out over this and tries to escape, but it is trapped in the cage. After repeated attempts, the rat gives up. No matter how much the experimenter continues to shock it, the rat will just lie there and take it - and here is the important point - even if the door to the cage is opened and the rat can clearly see it can now escape, it will stay and be shocked. It has learned to be helpless and will no longer try to be free, even when it can easily and obviously do so. When the experimenter then kills the rat and does a chemical analysis of its brain, he discovers the dramatic depletion of noradrenaline. The animal's brain has 'learned' not to produce more noradrenaline, and thus has 'learned' to be helpless.

They haven't released much of the lad's story yet. As you say, it's difficult to understand. I'm old enough to remember Patty Hearst and that strange adventure.

They still haven't said much about the young man's experiences to know what happened to him. Has anyone considered maybe the captor was eccentric enough to kidnap kids but maybe he didn't do anything weird like molest them? The boy was looking very hip with piercings and shaggy hair which some parents might not permit. Maybe he thought his captor was cool letting him do what he wanted and maybe he liked him more than his own parents?

Then again maybe it is Stockholm syndrome. But his kidnapper doesn't come across as a very ingenious person skilled at mind control. Seems like if there either of the boys had been raped the media would have leaked something by now.

My guess their is a 99.9% chance the guy was a pedaphile.
No matter how nice the kidnapper was the boys were not old enough to make a real choice. The word Stockholm syndrome
should not apply to kidnap minors.

I quite agree ! ! The lad had been living with this kidnapper since he was 7 (?) Children that age have a very malleable mindset. He was told his parents didn't want him, maybe this guy told him he had legally adopted him ??? The media says the boy went into denial when confronted with a lost child poster on the internet. Another boy showed it to him, and told him he looked like the picture.

And people wonder why I never listen to Browne.

Getting back to Horbeck's appearance, I'm surprised he removed his piercings. Was it his own decision?

Really, I have no idea. But what if the piercings weren't his idea in the first place? I mean, this guy (the kidnapped, not the boy) has already proven him nuts. He could have considered it a plus. (*shudder*)

I feel so sorry for the kid. Even now he can't really rest, because the media is critizing him (speculating why he didn't run and what not), and someone will always remember/know who he is.

And I suggest that we put Sylvia Browne up for trial too. What a selfish ploy and what a fraud.
