They don't host the newsgroups - this isn't the day of Usenet, after all. When you look up a newsgroup today, you're either getting a standard website, or a website where someone has archived a Usenet newsgroup from back in the day, and the host could be anywhere in the world.

On the contrary Usenet is alive and well. However, the amount of data traffic is so high that most ISP's only support the text based ones. I take part in several such text based groups. Newsgroups are a good way of sharing info and communicating with others on specific hobbies - if you can put up with some spam and flame wars, since the majority are unmoderated. Whatever your hobby there is likely an active Usenet group for it. Very few ISP's still support groups with images / binary files due to the massive demand on their systems and the risk of propagating illegal files.
