I send my condolences to his family.

I read he said his father and grand father were atheist and bootleggers. So I wonder how Jerry got on the false path of religion?

Family dynamics are always interesting. I know the older son of the famous murdered atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair ended up being religious. One thing I think you have to accept when being a parent, and living in a community with other people is they may very well wind up with beliefs other then your own; whether they be political, religious, or even what sexual orientation they end up. You can't control everything about your children's lives. Sometimes when you try to hard you will just end up turning them into the opposite of yourselves.

I live in in the Capitol of South Carolina, and I noticed that the flags on top of the Capitol Building's dome were at half mast today. --Now I think I know why.

Good Riddance to bad Sh*t is one thing I have to say about Jerry Falwell. Je$u$ $ave$ is another.

I don't care for the show business and three ring circus atmosphere that is part and parcel of televangelism, but everyone's hate talk here is way over the top. You risk being like the people you decry.

I have never heard of this guy before. Is this an Australian thing, or a Mitch thing?

This man did grave harm to many people and to this country. He advocated bigotry, oppression and fear of those who are different, and manipulated christian teaching to his end. He used the suffering of AIDS to sell a vicious, callous agenda. He aggressively influenced the national response to the AIDS epidemic in a way that kept many ill and dying people from getting the medical care, compassion and respect they deserved. Americans and christians ought to be ashamed that he was allowed the range of influence that he had, for the legacy he has left us with is not one of American broadmindedness or christian compassion but something very opposite of that.

Falwell taught vehemently and unforgivingly that difference and diversity are abominations, and sought to actively influence the politics of the country as well as its religious climate. He was openly determined to see that those who are different are marginalized and kept from having their say in our society. His teaching influenced not just the religious right, but three Republican presidential administrations and countless other elected Republican officials at all levels of government.

If you are angry because as someone with an ASD you feel that you do not get treated with the dignity you deserve, you have people like Falwell to thank for spreading that mentality throughout our "civilized" society. That is only one of the many ways his influence will remain with us. He was undeniably a man of hatred, willful ignorance and arrogance. Keep that in mind as you hear people eulogizing how wonderful a man and a christian he was over the next few days.

Couldn't have said it any better. Don't forget he blamed gays, Atheists, and every other minority he didn’t like for 11 September 2001. He was, and always will be, nothing more than a bigot. That is his legacy. A buddy of mine told at at work when the news came out, we slapped hands and jubilantly screamed about time. Some others in the office thought that was insensitive. I disagree!! !

I second that! This is why I really hope I'm right, 'cause I will bust some heads if there is a heaven, or even a hell, and somehow I get in to find him there.

There was a political cartoon in the local newspaper last week depicting Jerry Falwell at the Pearly Gates. The gates have been closed and locked, and Saint Peter is hiding behind one of the stone pillars that flank the gate, trying not to be seen, as Falwell peeks through the gates saying "Hello? Hey, anyone there? Hello?"

As looney as he may have been, at least he seemed to honestly believe his own bull**** (as opposed to say, Swaggart). What irritates me is how everyone says that he stood up to the culture...despite the fact that he seemed to retract many of his insipid little remarks. Surely one of God's big bad warriors needn't shrink back from the heathen leftist's disgust at his remarks pertaining to the 9/11 incident.

And while it's true that he wasn't as big of a nutter as Phelps...is that REALLY saying anything?
