I can understand that coming from a locale where only 80-something fatalities occurred within about 2 million square miles.

But try telling that to residents of a locale of about 300 square miles, where about 20,000 fatalities occurred.

Melbourne and Sydney have similar population densities to locales you are referring to

No one referenced population densities. Kk mentioned covid fatality rates, not population densities.

Actually fatalities/sq miles is relating to population spread = density

And were there 20,000 fatalities in Melbourne or Sydney like there have been in NY?

That's my point, Sydney has a similar population density to NY and had unfettered travel from China and multiple places till quite late. Yet it;s nowhere near as bad as NY.,,,interesting to conjecture why?

A timeline of Cuomo's and Trump's responses to coronavirus outbreak
Quote:
A day after New York reported its first case of novel coronavirus, Gov. Andrew Cuomo delivered words of confidence to residents.

"This isn't our first rodeo," Cuomo said at a March 2 press conference. "We are fully coordinated, and we are fully mobilized, and we are fully prepared to deal with the situation as it develops."

The governor, however, struck a much different tone, perhaps his most sobering yet, during a press conference on Tuesday.

"We underestimated this virus. It's more powerful. It's more dangerous than we expected," Cuomo said, warning there is no end in sight.

March 1

Cuomo announced New York's first confirmed coronavirus patient: a woman in her late 30s believed to have contracted the virus in Iran.

"There is no cause for surprise -- this was expected. As I said from the beginning, it was a matter of when, not if there would be a positive case of novel coronavirus in New York," Cuomo said.

He assured New Yorkers that the general risk in the state "remains low."

The message was along the lines of what other state leaders were telling residents and what the U.S. surgeon general was telling the public.

"#COVID19 is a serious disease, but for the general public the immediate health risk is considered low," Surgeon General Jerome Adams tweeted.

March 5

Confirmed cases in New York rose to 22, according to Cuomo, with most in Westchester County.

Cuomo urged New Yorkers to remain vigilant.

"Luckily in this country, and certainly in this state, we have the most sophisticated health care system probably on the globe. So, we're coordinated, we're on top of it, we're diligent. But we also have to keep it all in focus," he said.

De Blasio, Cuomo go on defensive over initial responses to coronavirus outbreak
Quote:
Mayor de Blasio and Gov. Cuomo went on the defensive Sunday over their initial responses to the coronavirus outbreak.

As recently as March 13, de Blasio told New Yorkers, “We want people still to go on about their lives. We want people to rest assured that a lot is being done to protect them.”

Sydney did not have Trump as President nor the political divisions the US has.

It was summer in Sydney, winter in New York

I imagine the poor in New York are poorer than in Sydney and not only wise.

Do most people in Sydney commute to work in an old crowded underground subway system?

Did people from the same regions of China travel to Sydney and Melbourne as they did to NY?

Did people from All Over The World travel to Sydney and Melbourne at the same rates as they did NY?

Chances are NYC is one of few major travel hubs of the entire world where MANY more people travel to and through than almost any other city on Earth.

Plus it was Winter vs Summer.

Population density is not the only metric to compare cities and infection rates by.
