ok lets take WW1 for example.
In 1909 Austria-Hungary annexed Bosnia and Hercegovina and this pissed off the south slav nationalists.
one group pissed off was a Serbian terrorist group known as the black hand run by Dragutin Demitrijevich who also helped assasinate king ALexander of Serbia in 1903.

The black hand found some young people who were against Austria violently but had no military experience and Demitrijevich armed them one of them was Gavrillo Princip,there were several others

on june 28th 1914 Gavrillo Princip shot and killed Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and that basicly started world war one.

A lot of corrupt individuals did a lot of nasty things and there were a few conspiracies in there too but there was no magical for profit war machine just individuals or small groups working together,and they started the biggest war in world history

Minimizing a world war to an assassination seems like it's probably an over simplification.

I did not simplify WW1 to just 1 assassination,if you read my post I talked about the annexation of Bosnia Hercegovina in 1909 by Austria-Hugary as a major factor.The act stired up south slav nationalism and gave rise to terrorist groups like the black hand,narodna odbrana and young Bosnia.Gavrilo Princip who was a member of young Bosnia was just the person who first lashed out at Austria.eventually world war 1 would have started anyway,the south slavs were to angry.
