Already posted on page 2 if I remember correctly.

Hmm, so there is a heartbeat in less than a month after conception.

Day 40: Brain waves can be detected and recorded.

That's a little over a month isn't it. So we have brain activity 40 days after conception.

Depending on the situation and the specifics it is possible for them to do an emergency C-Section and save both.

That is true, but that's not what I'm asking - who takes priority; mother or baby.

Depends on the situation, in all honesty a C-Section is actually safer for the mother than an abortion. A situation where the mother's life may actually be in jeopardy due to cancer, that is something for a doctor and patient to make a judgement call. However, if the doctor can save both lives, which is often the case these days, the doctor should do what he/she can to save both.

Also true, but that's not what I'm asking, if a person is a child or severely disabled is it still their responsibility?

There is such thing as adoption, and quite frankly in a situation like that often would fall into the rape category which is actually a extremely small percentage of abortions.

If you choose to have sex, you must be prepared for the consequences of a possibly pregnency resulting from it. That goes for both the guy and the girl.

Uh if the mother is in such a relationship break it off, and then get a restraining order and then insure you get sole custody of the child and child support.

A possibility, but that's not what I'm asking, if a mother is in such a relationship and the child would be at risk is it not her responsibility to protect that child by not having that child to begin with?

That is not protecting a child, that is simply killing the child and trying to rationalize it.

Bloodheart wrote:
Women don't choose to be in abusive relationships, if it was as easy as breaking it off and getting a restraining order than there would be no such thing as domestic violence, no women would ever face physical or sexual abuse from a partner, neither would their children - sorry to break it to you, but the world isn't like that.

And women can be just as abusive as men, they just tend to go unreported. Stop trying to justify killing a child using hypotheticals like this. If the woman is that concerned about what the child's life would be like, then she knows what her partner is doing to her is abuse and probably would break off the relationship.

She shouldn't have put herself in the situation of having sex, just like the guy shouldn't have either.

People have sex DUN DUN DUN - so no one should have sex unless they want a child? YOU may be okay with having sex just for procreation but that doesn't mean everyone is the same, birth control and abortion exists to prevent unwanted babies so that couples can use family planning to decide when they want to have children, when they are ready to care for children.

Again, people need to take responsiblity for their actions, we're talking about a child here not an object.

Bloodheart wrote:
As pointed out by cave_canem not all women choose to have sex - children, severely disabled, abuse victims, rape victims.
Why do they have to be responsible for someone else having sex with them?

Well over 90% of abortions have nothing to do with rape.

Tensu:

A few things for you to consider:

1. It is interesting that you would want to live as, and subject children to, a life of physical illness and pain caused by HIV, starvation, and death before the age of 5. As a mother, I can tell you I would do anything in my power to prevent a child of mine from having to go through any such thing - and if my circumstances meant that abortion was the only way I could prevent that kind of suffering for my child, then that is what I would do to protect my child. I find your position to be very selfish. The pain and suffering of thousands of children to uphold your moralistic viewpoint? Charming.

2. It is also interesting that you are implying that this comes down to the woman's choice - ie it is her choice to get pregnant. Considering the prevalence of sexual assualt against women, I cannot comprehend your argument. A woman does not have to choose to have sex to get pregnant.

3. You also argue that it is as much up to the father as it is the mother. Well, unfortunately, the father is not the one who has his body hijacked for 9 months. The father can walk away (or run away, as the case may be). The impact an uplanned / unwanted pregnancy has on the father cannot be compared to the impact on the mother (physically, emotionally, socially, and financially).

4. I find the vehemence with with pro-lifers push their arguments to be disconcerting. If you notice, those in favour of a woman's CHOICE are not trying to force abortions on women who do not want to have abortions; instead, they are supporting a woman's right to choose whether or not she wants to continue a pregnancy. Pro-lifers, on the other hand, want to take away a woman's right to choose. Pro-lifers want to dictate what women can and cannot do with their bodies.

5. My personal viewpoint on the matter is this - given my current situation (age, education, employment, financial stability, health, etc.), I would not choose to abort an accidental pregnancy. But I would never try to force this decision on anyone else. That is what is often lost (or ignored) in these arguments - pro-choicers are not necessarily people who would have abortions themselves. But they certainly do not think that their moral standpoint is superior to others'.

I numbered my points above in case you choose to respond to this message. That way, you could respond to ALL of the points I have raised. I notice you seem to conveniently ignore some statements/arguments raised by others.

Very good points you raised here, especially this one;
"I notice you seem to conveniently ignore some statements/arguments raised by others" not meaning to stir things up.

Although I would say it's more Anti-choice than Pro-life, that is something that always urked me about the whole issue, the term 'Pro-life' always implied those on the opposition were Anti-life which of course we're not, in fact I think both sides are equally in praise and in celebration of life but just from different points of view. I think the whole argument itself boils down to which is more important; life as a state different to that of inanimate objects, or life as something you live, or a case of 'a life v's quality of life for all involved'.

I don't really understand the extremeness that seems to accompany the abortion debate in America. Where I come from it's not an issue, some people are for it, some are against and they keep their opinions to themselves unless it directly involves them and everyone gets on with life.

Personally I am against abortion. I can't even really explain why, other than it being a feeling that comes from deep inside. That said, I wouldn't dream of trying to impose my opinion on another woman. Like someone else already mentioned I think the best way to tackle abortion is to address the reasons why women choose them. Give women viable alternatives.

I would be very interested to know what help and support is available to young women in America as it's a system I'm not familiar with. Perhaps someone could fill me in. If a woman chooses to go on the pill, how much would it cost them approximately? If she falls pregnant and is on a very low income, what sort of medical care can she expect to recieve? How much paid time off work will she be allowed following the birth? How much should she expect to pay for childcare if and when she returns to her low paying job? What sort of state support can she expect if she doesn't or cannot return to work? For how long will she be supported by the state?

Hospitals are required by law to provide medical care in an emergency situation.

True. I guess prenatal care isn't really important. Gestational diabetes, placenta previa, and the countless other conditions brought on by pregnancy aren't really important until mom's bleeding all over the floor or having a seizure.

They don't know what stage they're in. That's the whole point. Prenatal care is necessary monitoring for both mom and baby. Many, if not most pregnancy complications have no apparent symptoms, or the symptoms are masked by normal pregnancy symptoms. It is not the job of the ER to provide routine prenatal care.

Back to abortion though. I have tough time dealing with the hypocrisy of pro-lifers who cares so much about an unborn fetus and so little about that child once it's brought into this world. Here's some food for thought, how many teenage girls, who are children themselves, would die from botched, back alley abortions if it suddenly became illegal?

I read a book not too long ago that linked planned parenthood with the gradual lowering of crime from people of low-income, single parent backgrounds from 1980 to the 1990s.

It actually isn't that hard to figure out what stage they are in using ultrasounds for instance. May be oversimplifying but the point remainst the same.

I would honestly say the abortionists in those situations should be arrested. Here is a suggestion, instead of spouting off about how condoms are so wonderful and the morning after pill, blah blah blah. You actually teach about the possible consequences of having sex and if they are going to have sex they should be prepared for the consequences. Abstainence actually does work if followed 100% of the time.

You said there was a link between Planned Parenthood and a decrease in crime, well you are essentially arguing that killing children so there are fewer single parent households in poverty is good for society.

You're the one bringing vitriol into this. I have not advocated killing anybody. You really need to relax and actually try and understand the connection

The connection is fewer kids are being born because they are being killed in the womb.

Most abortions are done early on and involve not much more then a pill. Most of you "Pro-Lifers" ( ) really only view things from a horror story perspective
The point is, there are fewer unwanted pregnancies, leading to fewer children born into poverty & neglect, often without fathers, and a mother who is not able to provide much direct care due to employment. Look at South Central LA
It seems to me the real issue is that most of you guys really don't understand Human biology or fetal development. As far as I know in this thread you have not provided any peer-reviewed sources for your claims on fetal brain activity, heart activity or lung activity. For all intents and purposes, up until a certain point in the pregnancy, the fetus is part of the mother, as it could not possibly survive independently

Wow, that went right over your head. I wasn't talking about stage in pregnancy, I was talking about stage in the complication. Let's say a pregnant woman develops gestational diabetes, which is quite common. The mother most likely have no way of knowing without regular screenings at the doctors office (not ER). By the time she starts showing symptoms, the situation is quite serious and immediate delivery of the baby can be necessary, regardless of how far along the pregnancy is, putting both mother and baby at great risk. If this complication is discovered early, it's usually not a big deal and can easily controlled.

As for teaching abstinence, well now you could be onto something. Maybe if we just teach kids not to have sex they'll never do it! (sarcasm)
