Quote:
Singaporean photographer Leslie Kee and two others have been arrested on suspicion of selling photo collections containing images of male genitalia in Tokyo, an act police say constitutes illegal distribution of obscene documents.

Kee, 41, a Japan-based photographer known for his published works featuring celebrities such as Lady Gaga, and two Japanese organizers of a photo exhibition allegedly sold photo books containing the images, police said, adding that most of the pictures in the 50-page book showed male genitalia.

The two Japanese are 45-year-old Hiromi Yoshii, an executive of a company operating a gallery, and 27-year-old Yuko Kanda, an employee of the firm.

The three acknowledged the sales but the two Japanese denied the books contained obscene images. Kee gave evasive answers during questioning Monday, according to police.

The Metropolitan Police Department said the trio sold seven photo books worth ¥42,000 in total to two visitors at an event held in central Tokyo’s Roppongi district Saturday.
Fashionistas decry arrest

Japanese fashionistas leaped to the defense of Tokyo-based Singaporean photographer Leslie Kee on Tuesday after he was arrested for selling books containing pictures of male genitalia.

Kee, who has snapped megastars, including Lady Gaga and Beyonce, was arrested Monday on suspicion of obscenity after selling the books at his gallery.

The 41-year-old photographer could be jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to ¥2.5 million if convicted.

Pornography is widely available and produced in Japan, but under domestic law genitalia must be obscured.

“I am stunned by the news of Leslie Kee’s arrest,” Yamamuro Kazz, a leading fashion journalist and magazine editor, wrote on his website.

He questioned the police motivation behind the arrest, because Kee’s works were only available at a gallery event, a forum open just to people familiar with their artistic nature.

“The legal interpretation of whether genitals were exposed (or whether the work is obscene) is totally irrelevant to the intention of an artist,” Kazz said.

“Under their narrow interpretation, works by Terry Richardson and Robert Mapplethorpe are all considered obscene,” he said, referring to prominent U.S. photographers.

No doubt, governor Ishihara and his cronies are behind this (when is that man going to die, anyway?):

Sounds like a book which I would not want to read, some people might like to read such a book (I have no idea why). But why is this newsworthy ?

You're right, who actually cares about *this*, when the world is as corrupt as it is? Certainly not many. My apologies for posting about something "non-newsworthy". Would you rather that I had posted the latest gossip, instead, maybe...? Would that have been more newsworthy, perhaps?

Maybe I should've posted about this, back in October, instead:

Certainly would have been "newsworthy", at least, don't you agree...? One does wonder: What were the punishments for the cops, for doing that? Likely nothing at all. This world is indeed absolutely putrid. No, humanity is, more like it.

The artist, being from Singapore, did not know that images of male genitalia are illegal in Japan?

I really thought that this fact was well-known.

The owner of the gallery must have known; knowledge of laws pertaining to censorship would be necessary to anyone selling art.

I believe that this was a set-up for publicity.

Dear BeautyPact, regarding your last post;

The Japanese police could not find one person (IN JAPAN!?!) who understood how computers work?!?

My own view is that if a person is in the porn industry then it is up to them to make sure that they know and follow the laws of the places where they ply their trade, it is not reasonable to tell the police in Japan or Iran that you thought everything was OK becuase your conduct would not have been illegal by the laws and standards of California.

While many aspects of the porn industry disgust me, I think that clear laws are needed to regulate it rather than just allowing judges, DAs or police to decide what should be illegal based on what may be their own personal views.

The guilt by IP address suggests that the police were lazy and a little stupid, in the modern world a person must be shown to be guilty beyond all reasonable doubt. The failure to check for a computer virus suggests to me that the police were failing to plug all possible holes in the case.

If you look at the case of the cinema shooting in the USA, the police were keen to gather evidence such as gun shot residue from the hands of the person who a “reasonable man” might instantly think is 100 % guilty and responsible for the outrage. They want to be able to prove that he had fired a gun that night.

I think if you want a perfect reason to change the world you should look at the case of Peter Tabbers (http://www.fairtrials.net/publications/ ... e-summary/). This is Greek version of the IP number cases in Japan where the Greek police decide a man is guilty as he has a fax number which was used in a crime. Even when the fax number was assigned to him after the fraud occured.

Dear Woodpecker,
I agree completely.
Whatever industry a person works in, art, pornography, film, television, the food industry, it is that person's responsibility to know the pertinent laws of the country as well as local rules.

I believe that the gallery owner referred to in the first post knew exactly what he was doing, and probably the artist as well.

Japanese laws regarding images of male genitalia are well-known world-wide.

Further, due to improper police investigation, regarding the computer virus, I believe that the Japanese police are in for quite a lawsuit!
