that reminds me a few decades back of how elderly Japanese ex-soldiers were found living in the middle of the jungle also.

Not the unlikeliest such story from the region. There were American defectors to the DPRK, as well as a Catalan diplomat working there. To the best of my knowledge, one American is still living in Pyonyang.

I strongly suspect any efforts to "re-integrated them into society" would only cause suffering for all involved and would be ultimately futile. If they lived in the jungle for 40 years and were not bothering anyone they could have easily been allowed to live out the rest of their lives there, especially the father.
