Recent News Story - Afroman singer/rapper clocks female fan
I feel bad for the girl who got hit, she was probably drunk and didn't really know what she was doing. At the same time, the guitarist is trying to play his instrument, concentrate on that, and he is hoping if he ignores them long enough and look like he is trying to avoid them, which is what it looks like he is trying to do, they will leave and he says one of them left but the other one stayed. I am sure it is nerve racking having people up there in one's personal space. He doesn't seem to be looking at her directly so her hands go out and then he hits her. It's like he could only see those hands out of his peripheral vision, didn't know what she was doing so he lashes out, Still kinda crazy.
To me it looks like he thought her dancing was goofy so he hits her. He should devise a plan for his roadies to escort them off when they get up there like that.
I am sure there are a lot of people who have complained about this but it does no good to complain. If you really want to send a message there is only ONE way folks. DO NOT HAND OVER YOUR MONEY. Because that's really the only thing people understand. Money talks and the moment you lay your money down for a ticket. they stop listening and they do what they want but if you don't buy a ticket and never hand your money over, they will listen to that!
I always tell complainers, if they don't like something, simple, do not buy it because if you do buy it, there will be more and more because the message is loud and clear, what they are doing earns them more money. If you don't buy a ticket for something you don't like, it will either change or go away.
Afroman seems pretty convincing about what happened, I dunno. He said there were 2 women and a guy at the side of the stage and the guy was heckling him and he thought to 2 women had left so when he felt somebody behind him he thought it was the guy that was heckling him, obviously as a performer they get pretty upset about someone messing with the livelihood so he swung.
Nah, he seemed to be well aware of his surroundings. He was trying to ignore her, hoping she would go away. He just didn't want her up there while he was playing that guitar solo and he has the right to decide who is on that stage with him. He ran into trouble when he took care of the situation himself instead of working out a plan with someone on his team to handle the situation for him and I can understand getting annoyed about stuff like that and getting pissed off, too, but when all those people are watching you gotta have a good plan and back up to deal with it and he didn't.
Anyway now Afroman says he now just wants to retire and be with his family. Touring probably has him all wound up and he needs to unwind. That kind of environment every night can wreck havoc on people with anxiety disorders anyway.
I can certainly understand where he's coming from though. Having an anxiety disorder. Trying to do something. Having someone in my personal space I don't want there. Having my requests disregarded and ignored. Having zero respect for my wishes. Yeah it can build and it can definitely piss someone off and it might even be enough to push someone over the edge. That's why you gotta figure things out before they spiral out of control.
It's all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T and I do empathize with both the young lady and Afroman both. Can we figure out what respect means, folks? It's really not that complicated a concept.
I have been to hundreds of concerts and no, that wasn't the norm at any of them. I also experience a lot of anxiety and concerts, even though I love them, put me in a really sorry mood because they just wreck havoc on my cns and I dunno if that's what is happening to Afroman but it's certainly possible. Then add to it hundreds of obnoxious drunks who are in their own little world and kinda just horrid to be around...seen plenty like this, too.
Thats what I thought.
Sounded convincing (hope there are witnesses to corroborate the existence of the male heckler).
He thought he was decking a hostile male person who was getting on his frayed nerves.
In a crazy setting like a drunken Mardi Gras festival stuff happens.
Kinda like when Ozzy Osbourne killed a poor innocent animal on stage (and put his own life in jeopardy in the process).
At a climactic moment in his live performance a fan tossed (what to Ozzy looked like) one of those halloween black toy bats (the animal) on stage. Out of theatrical exuberience he picked up the toy, and played along by... putting its head into his mouth, and biting it off.
It turned out to be a live real bat. The poor thing died a horrible death, and Ozzy had to be rushed to the hospital to be given rabies shots. He probably both lost, and gained, zillions of fans for doing that macabre stunt.

Uh, there's always obnoxious people at concerts. That goes with the territory. You cannot make them go away. They are always gonna be there and they are always gonna cause problems. A lot of them are either drunk or high and don't even know what they are doing. You wouldn't believe some of what I have seen. Just all kinds of crazy stuff from folks who are drunk or high. So, you just gotta put up with it or distance yourself. You can get security to deal with them, which is what Afroman should have done. So the heckler thing doesn't fly. Yeah they are irritating, still no excuse for the artist to punch someone on stage. It's his show, he needs to run it better than that. It aint his job to take care of that sort of thing. He is there to play his music, pretty much, not wrestle the crowd.
I think number one artist should look out for themselves on that stage and guard against anything that tarnishes them or makes them look bad. ALWAYS get the worker bees to do the dirty work and NEVER stoop to that level. I think it's a good rule of thumb for any performer so they can concentrate on what they are there for.
It's all about showmanship is pretty much what it is and doing the best for yourself otherwise you are just up there kicking yourself in the gut and what's the point of that?
I guess I haven't been to a ton of concerts but I've seen enough videos of people getting tossed off or even beat down for running on stage. I don't think I'd want to run up on stage at a rap or punk or metal or whatever show, I'd personally expect to be beat down but that's just me. I watch pro-wrestling and when somebody jumps over the barrier, they get beat up more times than not by the performer, I know comedians certainly don't like when they get heckled and they'll attack you verbally if you do so. You have the self defense issue as well as the fact that these people are literally interfering with their livelihoods so I understand the frustration especially when you are dealing with drunk people. Obviously he shouldn't of punched anyone, that is something security should deal with and is a real failure on their part for not dealing with this. Afroman isn't a particularly big time rapper, this appeared to be a pretty small venue so I doubt there was full security there.
It just depends on the performer. Some don't want them up there, others don't care and I guarantee someone set up for Afroman because the performer never does it himself, usually, or at least not when there's people around. It's always roadies. So get the roadie to round them up and lead them off and you know I have seen so many of them just simply walk off the stage without saying a word when they aren't getting respected and I think that's the best thing to do.
A lot of people in the audience are just there to drink or waste time but there's always some who know every song by heart and live for the music and you got to play for that crowd.

Uh...
were not talking about the folks in the crowd annoying you in the audience. Were talking about a guy right up on stage harrassing the talent.
The venue wasnt equipped with security for the stage performers apparently. And street revelers were just loitering on stage with the performers.
Didnt say it was an "excuse". But it is kinda understandable.

TBH she just looked like a drunk girl. Okay. She didn't look like she was harassing. Sure she looked dumb but drunk people often do. Sure, she refused to listen, but drunk people often don't.
Be there for the song. The only reason some people wake up each day is to hear that music. It's the only thing that gets them through life. Everyday they go through your catalog and they sing every song you ever recorded. They show up at your concert because the only thing they want to hear is your playing your music live. I've been one of those people. To hell with the damn drunks. Screw them. Don't ruin it for the people who live for the music.
I am all for that opportunity to become the music. To me it's a magical moment.
I'll drop the other shoe and say the obvious punch line (somebody HAS to say it).
That he did it "because he got high".
If any of you readers were living under a rock in the early 2000's that was Afroman's biggest hit -the hilarious "Because I Got High".
But weed tends to chill you out.
Maybe his touring schedule caused him to use speed, or coke, to stay awake days on end. And thats why his nerves snapped.
Just a theory.

Look close. Afroman did not seem high at all. The girl on the other hand looked like she was drunk. Why should we sit here and assume he was high when there's no indication he is. He aint acting goofy. He seems to know what he's about with his guitar. The girls putting her hands out and looks kinda trippy like she's drunk and acting goofy. I've seen lots of people out of it act like her.

I started by just making a joke, and then went off on a tangent. He became nationally known for his one hit - a saga about a guy who screws up his life repeatedly, and royally, because "I got high". So now that he's made a huge screw up in real life, and we're all wondering why, the hook of his song "because I got high" comes to your mind. But as I typed the words it occurred to me maybe he was on booze instead of pot-or better yet-on something that pumps you up-like crack, or meth. The girl was obviously drunk. He doesnt look stoned on weed, nor even drunk. But I admit that he doesnt have the hyper mannerisms of folks on speed, or crack either. So I guess it was just unadulterated anger he was "on". No chemicals needed.
I agree that seeing your favorite star suddenly turn and deck someone on stage does kinda...take away the magic of the evening.
