We send people to prison as punishment, not to be punished.
That's true, but a lot of people view what goes on in prison as part of the punishment, however correctional systems are getting a lot of lawsuits over rapes and stabbings that happen in prison.
I strongly believe that allowing aggression by inmates is contrary to the goal of making them better when they are released than what they were going in. The prisons should do everything to stomp it out.
As far as I'm concerned, assault against anyone (a guard, another inmate, or someone else) by a prisoner should get them transferred to a maximum security prison, restart their sentences, add an additional five years to the sentences, and not permit any possibility of parole or other early release. And, of course, any further assault would extend the sentence by another five years and restart it from scratch. Possession of weapons or other contraband should do the same.
