No antibiotics worked, so this woman turned to a natural enemy of bacteria to save her husband’s life

^Thought this was a cool story worthy of sharing. Hadn't really heard of this before. Sounds like other parts of the world figured it out long ago, but at least we're on track now and it should be helpful moving forward.

I don't know why this isn't better known about. Apart from some bacteria that are fatal in extremely low concentration, phages can fall with pottery much all the rest of them.

Back in college, I had classes in the same building as one of the leading researchers on the topic. Leading American researchers, the Georgians have been at it for decades.

I think the "miraculous" part was she did it in three weeks. :hail:

Let's see if—in her spare time—she'll take on World Peace, climate change, pollution, habitat loss, human mortality,...

Probably because the pharmaceutical industry wants to exploit maximum profit from antibiotics before capitalizing on the next thing.. or it's difficult & time consuming to do the latter etc.

MOST questions starting with "Why," can be answered with "Money."

My vague understanding of the top priority of a pharmaceutical company is: MAKE MONEY!!

Which guides their decisions regarding which products are worth the considerable expense of development.

The company will prefer a good, long-term revenue stream...for instance, something many patients need to keep purchasing for the rest of forever (for instance, recurring vaccines such as COVID). If only a small number of patients need the pharmaceutical and only for a limited amount of time then it is not so attractive for development (for instance, an antibiotic for a rare problem).

In the article, the people identified as being helpful were with the government or academia. Different priorities.

That's an amazing account! We should be using that in our health system.

Another thing I like about that is: It’s a glowing tribute to the immense kindness of strangers.

It always baffles me why strangers are generally so much kinder than people we know. Total strangers have helped me often and in the nick of time e.g. when I fell over and twisted my ankle badly in the street, 5 of them stopped to help, called a taxi to take me home, and the taxi driver refused payment as I was injured. I've never forgotten that.

Yes!

And also a glowing tribute to utilizing the power of the internet & telecommunications to crowdsource cures. I’ve read about a few super intense medical cases with people all over the world collaborating on treatments. A whole lot of magic can happen brining various experts from around the world together to problem solve. None of this was even possible a few short decades ago.

In this case, that's not likely, antibiotics are a terrible product to sell. Most of the easy ones were developed years ago and the more doses they sell, the less effective and valuable they are.

Also, this stuff is already in the food supply, last I heard it was being used to reduce ecoli in beef.

I had a superbug many years ago which required specialist antibiotics.

It had infected my bowel and I was going to the toilet up to 15 times a day (sometimes more).

That was a nightmare....

That is what the internet should be used for isn't it: helping others and good causes. Not people ranting about the latest celebrity relationship or hating others because they are different to them.
