Being used by other autistic people

I'm upset about two autistic menwho live near me. One of them was my friend but constantly pushed me to have guitar lessons. As long as I had them he was friendly but when I stopped he broke promises and became cold. Another was friendly but when I didn't want to be n a documentary he was making he also broke promises to me. I unfriended them both but I am feeling down because it's the same old story, so many users out there.

Either their parents never taught them any social skills or they are trying to be NT. Ending it with those guys is a good idea.

Yep....They had a purpose in being your "friend."

I don't know, maybe they have their reasons. Best to let it go now.

Sounds like maybe those were their special interests, and they were unwilling to communicate with anyone unless they shared them. That's wrong behavior on their part because even though a lot of us have special interests, we recognize that not everyone is going to find them equally interesting. If they limit their interactions to only people willing to agree with them on everything, they won't find many good friends. It's for the best that you moved on, I think.

Over and over I see people in these forums disappointed that some aspie friend hurts them.

The thought process seems to be, "we're both autistic so we will get along because we understand each other." Wrong. If anything, another aspie is someone difficult to relate to and wrapped up in his own stuff.

I'm a lousy friend and I know it. As a result, I try not to let anyone get dependent on me. I can be very generous, but I can't be counted on.

Conditional friends regardless of their neurology aren't worth having. They will likely end up alienating a lot of people throughout their lives.

I'd rather know somebody who uses hair conditioner, rather than use mud in his/her hair. Unconditionally.

Unfortunately, it's one of the unwritten Rules of Society that people will only be interested in you for what you can provide for them -- ND, NT, ET, or whatever.

I would say that the above is true in, perhaps, a large minority, or a small majority, of cases.

I'm just giving my opinion....I don't follow anybody around.

I just follow the statement.
