I really want to avoid this turning into another political argument...

But it really bothers me that everyone thinks I hate my own country the US just because I admit that there are things about this country I don't like and that I wish we did better.

So American patriotism is supposed to be about not questioning anything about our government or the morality of our society? Just pretending like everything is OK here and that we don't have any problems at all?

I would think a true patriot who loves their country would speak out for what they believe is the right thing to do for their people. But anybody here in the US who does that basically gets treated like some sort of traitor who hates America.

There are problems....but it is still a great nation.

...........I was not talking about you ya egomaniac. I actually enjoy talking to you. :P

One of the worst ones about this is actually my own mother believe it or not. She always gets mad at me whenever I want to talk about things in this country that I don't like or talk about the bad things we have done in the past like the way we treated the Native Americans. It feels like a lot of other Americans are like that towards me.

Woody Guthrie loved his country; but was highly critical of it, too.

I love my country too, and I love my state. I wouldn't give up my culture for anything. I just wish our country would change some of the very real problems we have is all.

I imagine everyone who fought for the Civil Rights movement knew how it felt too and there was probably a lot more hostility towards them at the time.

I think the only REAL patriots are the people who are willing to admit our flaws and do something to make them better while believing in the founding ideals of the country.

The US has problems but so does the rest of the world. It's still a great place to be, there's a few twits out there but don't let them ruin your country.

I think we are better than a lot of places, but I also think that if we don't acknowledge and fix our problems we won't be a great country anymore and I would really hate for that to happen to us.

My new friend from Kuwait has told me things about his country that I found very shocking and yet he still loves his country very much and is proud of his culture. But it was also very eye-opening and made me realize how lucky I am to live in the US and to appreciate this country more. Of course I still believe that I should always speak my mind against what I think is right and wrong in our culture. I never want to feel oppressed in my own country!

Some people use patriotism as a way to justify or condone bad things like being hateful. It's similar to how some Christians use their religion to justify bad things that go against Jesus's teachings like supporting war.

It's more than just being hateful. It really bugs me that we make no real effort to try and change or fix things anymore like we used to back in the day. We just like pretending that there are no real problems in our country that should be fixed. We basically aren't doing s**t about the mass shootings that are occuring in American schools almost every year, and healthcare is ridiculously expensive in this country and nobody wants to make any effort to fix it so that people don't end up completely destitute after an operation that means life or death.

You know, things like that.

Yes. That's patriotism in a nutshell. It's pretty stupid, isn't it?

I don't want to believe that is true patriotism. I think that's more like denial.

OKAY. so. as a non-us citizen here. this all is not about questions of politics and nations. we have the same, its everywhere the same. there are people, who want to hate without thinking, there are people who want to well, follow, again without thinking. and both of them will rain down the thunder on anybody who even is trying to stand on a middleground. subject doesnt matter. its just part of population, that thinks in all-or-nothing terms. dixi. please dont let it get to u, all of u. treat it like natural disaster. evade. guardian demon, out.

Yep. Teddy had the right idea.

He was a staunch Republican who supported environmental issues.
